Now, the Runnin' Rebels face the prospect of playing half the season without their star center and another prized recruit. UNLV, which had been anticipating the team's best season since the 1990- 91 team reached the Final Four, is now facing a season of uncertainty after the loss of the three key players. A trip to Florida paid for by a regis- tered sports agent prompted the NCAA to suspend center Keon Clark for 11 games and ban recruit Kevin Simmons for 14 games. UNLV filed an appeal yesterday on Clark's suspension, hoping to get the penalty reduced. The school did not challenge the penalty to Simmons. The NCAA initially was considering permanently barring both players after they accepted extra benefits from a friend of Simmons who is a registered sports agent. The benefits from the agent, whose name UNLV would not reveal, included airfare to Florida during spring break in March as well as hotel rooms and meals. The suspensions come in the wake of Odom's decision to give up his scholar- ship at UNLV rather than cooperate in a probe of his ACT tests. * The suspensions mean UNLV could start two freshmen on a team that seem- ingly went overnight from being very deep to quite thin. One of those could be at Clark's center position, where 6- foot-9 freshman Kaspars Kambala might play. "We're still playing to win every game," Bayno said. "We're going to go out every night and give our best." _. -. Author AIbom t sign in A By Josh Klelnbaum Daily Sports Writer If he signs it, they will buy it. The book focuses on the weekly talks the two had, and the lessons that Albom learned. *chwartz died of Lou Gehrig's dis- ease 16 years after the two had met, leaving Albom with memories he recounted in the book. "We're very excited to have (Albom) here," Rooney said. "He's a big~name for this area."
