The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - December 8, 1997 - 7B johns on the move, Walker set to return By Tracy Sandier Daily Sports Writer Michigan center Pollyanna Johns has been on the move of late. g Not only did she move up two spots Ehe Wolverines' all-time scoring list, but sJe also moved up one spot on Michigan's all-time rebound list. F Going into this weekend's Duke Classic Tournament, Johns had 868 career .points, which placed het 14th on the Wolverines' list. But Johns broke 14Ce 44 into the No. 12 spot *h a 13-point per- formance against Florida A&M on Saturday and a 20- point showing on Sunday. Adding to her weekend of records, Johns is No. 5 on the career rebound list. As the weekend's play began, Johns was sixth with 608 rebounds and need- ed two more to move up. She accomplished that goal by grab- 10 rebounds in Saturday's game and 11 more yesterday. POST-GRADUATION BASH: Last night the Wolverines played Duke in the final game of the tournament, dropping the championship game to the host Blue Devils, 64-63. The game featured a competition between two former classmates who are now opposing coaches. Michigan coach Sue Guevara and ke coach Gail Goestenkors both duated from Saginaw Valley State. Adding to the relationship ties, Guevara was once an assistant at her alma mater, while Goestenkors played there. The two coaches are still friends today. "Am I happy I lost to my best friend? No," Guevara said. "I knew it was going to be a chess match, but I had fun tonight." TOURNEY LEADERS: Since Guevara took over as coach at Michigan, the Wolverines are 9-3 in tournament play. Their most recent tally came with Saturday's victory over Florida A&M. Earlier this season, the Wolverines were victorious at the Michigan State Felpausch tournament, when they beat the Spartans in the championship game. Over Thanksgiving, the Wolverines participated in the Florida International Tournament. They lost a heartbreaker to Florida International, 69-67, when the Golden Panthers' Gergana Branzova hit a jumper to end the game. The Wolverines won the consolation game, 104-72, over Furman University, marking the Wolverines' third-highest point total ever. This most recent tournament in Raleigh-Durham marks the Wolverines' third tournament this sea- son. WALKER'S RETURN: Sophomore Kenisha Walker, who has been side- lined all season with a knee injury, could return as early as late next week. The forward will have tests done on her knee Dec. 18, and could be cleared to play then. - Daily Sports Writer Josh Kleinbaum contributed to this report. BLUE DEVIL Continued from Page 1B utes left. "We make one free throw here or there, we win the game," Guevara said. "We're there. We're where we want to be. We just need to make some free throws." The Wolverines got no help from their bench, literal- ly. All 63 points were scored by starters. The bench added only one assist and five rebounds, while turning the ball over three times. Despite trailing by 12 at the half, 37-25, the Wolverines battled back, largely due to a 9-0 run mid- way through the second half. , Trailing by 10, Lemire hit a layup with less than 14 minutes to go in the game. Forty seconds later, after Browne committed an offensive foul, Lemire added a 3-pointer. cutting the Duke lead to five. Stacey Thomas then converted on a three-point play after being fouled on a driving layup, and Pollyanna Johns added a free throw to cut the Blue Devils' lead to one. duke responded with a run of its own, as Michele VanGorp hit a layup with less than five minutes left to put the Devils up eight. But Thomas wouldn't let the Wolverines roll over. The sophomore guard scored six points in the final five minutes - a 3-pointer from the top of the key and a three-point play - and added a steal, setting the stage for the final two minutes. Guevara found several posi- tives in the loss to Duke, the highest-ranked team the Wolverines have played all season. First and foremost was the emergence of Stacey Thomas, last year's Big Ten freshman of the year. Thomas had contributed very little going into the game. But yesterday, Thomas added four rebounds. three assists and two steals to her 19 points. "Stacev Thomas came out to play tonight.' Giuevara said. "Stacey played very confident. She didn't hesitate getting her shot off." Guevara also noted that a game like this will go miles in preparing the Wolverines for the rigors of the Big Ten schedule. "I really, really think we can play with anyone in the country," Guevara said. "This will get us ready for the Big Ten schedule. We have to play teams like Duke to be ready for teams like Illinois, Iowa and Purdue:' The Blue Devils had a very balanced attack, with five players scoring in double digits. Nicole Erickson scored 16 points, and Lauren Rice added 10 points and nine rebounds.
