On Nov. 27, 1997, Macy's held its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in
New York City. The event, which began promptly at 9 a.m., started on
Manhattan's Upper West Side and rolled down to 34th Street. Fourteen
marching bands from 13 states, including Michigan, 600 clowns and
1,200 cheerleaders battled winds that reached up to 43 mph. There was
an atmosphere of fear and anxiety in the air. Because of the winds, the
hovering balloons moved unpredictably and dangerously. In an unfortu-
nate occurrence, a woman helping to handle the strings of a giant balloon
got her legs tangled, and due to the harsh winds, she was dragged 20
yards across the pavement on 72nd and Columbus. When the parade
came to an end at about 2 p.m., there was an overwhelming feeling of
relief among the 400,000 spectators of this annual holidspectacl
