Internet travel sites simplify trip planning

Good luck if you're looking for an
affordable Rose Bowl plane ticket. You
might find that elusive boarding pass
hiding in your mailbox, or wake up
with a ticket under your pillow, but
your best shot is taking a short surf on
the Net.
LSA junior Jessica Hermenitt was
loafing with friends two Fridays ago
when she decided to search major air-
lines' websites for Rose Bowl tickets.
And thanks to the Internet, she'll be
spending her New Year's In Pasadena.
"We got a $258 round trip from
Chicago to L.A., put a 24-hour hold on
the price and made reservations the next

day, after we beat Ohio State,"
Hermenitt said. "There was no way we
would have found these fares wi Iput
the Internet."
Internet travel arrangements are not
all so hit-or-miss. Preview Travel, at
www previewtravel.com., brags that it
"enables customers to act as their own
travel agents 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week." Preview, the official travel
agency for America Online, has 1.8 mil-
lion subscibers and weekly bookings of
$1.5 million to $2.2 million dollars.

searches four times daily through travel
agents' airline registration system. All a
customer must do is -log onto the Web
site and enter the city and date of their

flight's arrival and departure; a screen
will then appear displaying the best
fares among 700 different airlines.

site has a wealth of information about
almost every nation across the globe.
Cost estimates for room and board,
tourist advisories, national histories

and travel requirements are all provid-
ed. But the strength of the site is a bul-
letin board sharing traveling know-
how and instructive tales.

One response

while another traveler warned that there
are a large number of stray dogs and a
high incidence of rabies in Mexico.
But Internet travel is not always
worth the time and hassle. Angie Shaw,
manager of Boersma Travel, said "a lot
of times students don't have the time to
do all the searching.
"Travel agents have been doing this
for years, and we are far more experi-
enced finding fares than someone who
just jumps on the Internet, " Shaw said.
"We charge a $10 commission per air-
line ticket, and we can offer packages at
a discount."
With thousands of new travel sites
appearing yearly, it may be difficult to
distinguish which Internet tour sponsors
are reliable. Students need to be particu-
larly careful, as they appear to be attrac-
tive bait for certain traveling scams.
Brenda Roper, owner of Alaskan
Wilderness Journeys, approximates that
10 percent of her business comes from
online customers. She urges travelers to
fully investigate any tour operator
before sending the check in the mail.
"Be sure to check the local travel
membership bureaus and be sure to ask
for references;' Roper said. "Also, you
can learn a lot just talking to a person
on the phone and seeing what type of
rapport you have."
Shaw strongly recommended that
travelers, to be safe, should always
consider at least checking with a travel
agent before booking tour packages.
"We don't work with companies that
aren't bonded, and we know a lot of
companies that are good to work with,"
Shaw said.

should look out for its latest installment,
"Tomorrow Never Dies," which opens
Dec. 19. Starring the painfully suave
Pierce Brosnan, the film is No. 18 in
the MGM/UA canon of flicks that were
made famous by Sean Connery and
Roger Moore. While some may remem-
ber the old gadget-laden Aston-Martin
and magnetic watch from Bond's Cold
War days, this film has a more contem-
porary twist. It reportedly features hi-
tech BMWs, exploding Omega watches
and other product tie-ins (capitalism at
its best, no doubt). Producers hope, it
seems, that the in-film marketing will
make their $100 million marketing bud-
get worthwhile; they want to surpass
