Michigan has good shot at na tion championship Griese says he has one dream left By John Lerol Daily Sports Editor The regular season ended perfect- ly for Michigan, but the Wolverines still say there's one more to go. And with a victory in the Rose Bowl over No. 10 Washington State the Wolverines will, in all probabili- ty, win their first national champi- onship since 1948. With an unde- feated regular season behind them, Michigan can now confront the idea of winning the national champi- Lg 0 0 0 0 0 Brk-up 2 1 1 1 5 TD 0 0 0 0 0 MICHIGAN PASSING Player Griese Totals C-A 14-25 14-25 RUSHING Player Aft Floyd 11 Thomas 14 Howard 7 Griese 10 Totals 42 RECEIVING Player No. Thomas 8 Howard 3 Woodson I *Tuman 1 Shea 1 Totals 14 Yds -32 42 Yds 77 7 37 17 9 147 Yds- 147 147 Avg 3.0 a2.1 21.7 -3.2 1.0 Avg 9.6 2.3 37 17 9 10.5 TD 0 0 Lg 15 10 3 6 15 Lg 19 5 37 17 9 37 Int 0 0 TD 0 1 0 0 1 TD 0 0 0 0 0 0 Footba 7Zete6aak onship. The Wolverines' chance for their first national crown in 49 years became much better after Florida's 32-29 upset of No. 2 Florida State. The Seminoles were previously undefeated and ranked first in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, a spot that Michigan now owns. If Florida State and Nebraska both ended the season undefeated, the two teams would have squared off in the Orange Bowl with at least a share of the national championship on the line. Now, even if the Cornhuskers beat Colorado this Saturday and Texas A&M the weekend after, they could lose to either Tennessee or Penn State in the Orange Bowl, each of whom have lost once. And even if Nebraska beats one of those teams, the win might not be that impressive considering its opponent's record. It also hurts that the Cornhuskers needed a miracle to slide by unranked Missouri. The only impressive win Nebraska can boast of is an early-season win over Washington, who now has two loss- es. The Wolverines have a command- ing lead in the new AP top 25 poll, garnering 69 of a possible 70 votes. The Wolverines own 46 of the 62 first-place votes in the coaches poll. GRIESE STILL DREAMING: You have to give Michigan quarterback Brian Griese credit. After two less- than spectacular seasons and an incident at a local bar that got him temporarily removed from the team, Griese made the decision to return for his final year of eligibility with the Wolverines even though he grad- uated. Saturday, Griese ended a terrific regular season, completing 14 of 25 passes for 147 yards and no inter- ceptions. But Griese said while an undefeated season and Rose Bowl berth are fantastic ways to end a career, he hasn't reached his final goal. "Believe it or not, I haven't achieved my dream yet," Griese said. "I didn't come back not to win the Rose Bowl. That was my goal from the start." Friday, Griese was named a final- ist for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, given annually the nation's top signal caller. Other finalists include Tennessee's Peyton manning, Washington State's Ryan leaf, UCLA's Cade McNown and Kentucky's Tim Couch. The winner will be announced on Dec. II as part of the 1997 Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. WOODSON'S RIVAL: Michigan's Charles Woodson may be the best cornerback in the nation, but he has some pretty stiff competition from Ohio State's Antoine Winfield. The junior led the Buckeyes in tackles with 10, including a touch- down-saving tackle on Woodson. Winfield also broke up a pass, but it was his coverage and tackling abili- ty that had people in the press box raving. THE PACKED HOUSE: Saturday's crowd of 106,982 set a new single- game attendance record in Michigan Stadium. The previous record was 106,867 for the 1993 Michigan- Ohio State game. How did they pack so many more people into the stadium? The Ohio State band had a part in it, but the Michigan Athletic Department issued 1,097 media credentials instead of the typical 700. INJURY UPDATE: As Michigan coach Lloyd Carr would say, the Wolverines are "banged up." Starting tailback Chris Howard left with a concussion in the first half. Starting offensive lineman Jeff Backus missed most of the game with a reinjured right ankle and tail- back Clarence Williams was held out of the game for the third straight time.
