LVAI I/TATF The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 21, 1997 - 7 Students hope dance marathon will raise charity funds u0 Event aims to raise funds for Children's Miracle Network for William Beaumont Hospital y Angela Delk For the Daily Planners for an upcoming dance marathon hope to live up to the event's slogan - "making kids smile, maize and blue style." "It is going to be incredible ... and really real- ly exciting," said Deborah Wagner, who chairs the event's entertainment committee. Wagner said she is spending a lot of time choosing bands, DJs and campus singing groups for the dance marathon. The event will be held Feb. 7-8 at the Indoor Track and Tennis Building. Participants will dance for 30 hours in an effort to raise proceeds for the Children's Miracle Network for the William Beaumont Hospital. This will be "the first year ever of the Dance Marathon at U of M," said Bradley Holeman, LSA junior and the morale com- mittee chair. Holcman's duties require keep- ing spirits high for an expected 150 dancers and volunteers. To keep the audience pumped throughout the evening, Holeman said the spirit theme for this year's marathon is "Around the World Every Two Hours." Participants will dance to music from different cultural, racial and ethnic back- grounds representing different parts of the coun- try. Holeman said he is excited about the New York portion of the marathon, when a ball will be dropped to simulate New Year's Eve in Times Square. The Children's Miracle Network trained com- mittee members on how to develop a dance marathon to directly benefit to a local CMN hos- pital. Since the first dance marathon at Pennsylvania State University in 1993, CMN has focused on using the event as a means to raise funds and awareness. Last year, Penn State's 4th annual dance marathon earned $1.51 million. Evan Meyers, an LSA junior involved in planning the dance marathon at the University, said he hopes 150 participants will raise about $37,500. "The purpose of the marathon is to pro- mote a positive image for students on cam- pus, to build a legacy of caring and commu- nity involvement, raise money for local kids and learn how to run a business with real-life challenges and experiences," said CMN Director David Facen. Holeman said the event also will promote campus diversity. "It will give students from all different back- grounds the opportunity to develop diverse friendships and have a great time with mem- bers of the university community," Holeman said. Meyers said planners hope the dance marathon will become an annual institution. "We hope the Dance Marathon will be around and increasingly successful for may years to come," Meyers said. LANSING (AP) - High schoolers in Michigan wear seat belts, exercise and stay away from some drugs in roughly the same proportion as teens from around the nation. But according to a survey released yesterday of almost 4,000 students, many have tried marijuana at least once, and a majority have had at least one alcoholic beverage in the past month. The numbers come from the nation- al Youth Risk Behavior Survey, con- ducted this spring by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The survey asked 3,933 high-school students between the ages of 12 and 21 questions about smoking, drug use, sex, physical activity and dietary habits. Out of 80 questions, Michigan teens had answers that were similar to the last survey's 1995 national results on 75 items. For example, a large majority of stu- dents said they had tried cigarette smoking, had at least one drink of alco- hol and talked with their parents about AIDS or HIV infection. The survey suggests that students are concerned about their health, but still take part in a few risky activities,espe- cially smoking and drinking. About 82 percent said they had tried alcohol, while 75 percent said they had tried cigarette smoking. Thirty-two percent said they had drank five or more drinks in a row in the past month; 48 percent said they had tried marijuana at least once in their life. On the safe side, 19 percent said they rarely or never wore a seat belt. And 56 percent of Michigan students had exer- cised to lose weight or to keep from gaining weight in the past month. Almost half said they had had sex, and among students who had sex in the past three months, 58 percent said they used a condom. Lindy Miller, a junior at Holt High School, said her peers have a lot of information about the choices they make, whether to exercise or smoke. "There are a lot of programs that do a lot of things to advertise what can happen to you," she said. But "a lot of people are curious, and it's just an age of experimenting.
