By Will McCahill Daily Sports "Editor And the Maurice Taylor watch continues6.. The junior forward refused to rain on the parade of positivity and praise last night at the 36th Annual Michigan Basketball Bust, keep- ing mum on his future. Speculation has raged around Taylor all sea- son - and with torrential intensity in the last few weeks -regarding whether he will give up his final year of collegiate eligibility and enter the NBA draft. "I have abig decision to make" Taylor said. "But I really don't want to discuss it tonight, because this banquet was for our team, for us winning the NIT." And indeed, the shindig at Crisler Arena last night was full of highlights, compliments and fond words for each player. But Michigan coach Steve Fisher neverthe- less may have given an indication of Taylor's, intentions. In summarizing each Wolverine's season and noting what he expects from them in the future, he ended his statements by telling the crowd what that player would do next sea- son "for Michigan." But Taylor drew different remarks. Fisher's statement sounded a little more like a collegiate eulogy than a coach's plan for the offseason. "Mo Taylor will continue to grow and progress as his career goes on," Fisher said, then presented his star to the crowd. "A terrific player for Michigan, Mo Taylor." Taylor has no illusions about how grueling his decision-making process will be as he weighs the pros and cons of his options. "It's obviously a really tough decision," he said. "When you've got guys like this, you want to hang around, but when you have a dream that you always wanted to grab ahold of, and it's within your reach, there are a lot of things that can change your mind in everyday society." Sophomore guard Louis Bullock, who shared the Bill Buntin Most Valuable Player Award with center Robert Traylor, said no mat- ter how close his relationship is with Taylor, there's no way he can offer any kind of advice. "I have no idea about that" Bullock said. "Anybody who would make a decision like that, I wouldn't try to persuade them because obviously they're making a decision for their life. "I don't talk to him about it because who wants to talk about it? Everybody in the media wants to ask him and all that, so I don't help him out by asking him what he wants to do. I help him out by just being his teammate." The theme of teammates and family was a thread that ran throughout last night's proceed- ings, from the words of master of ceremonies Jim Brandstatter to guest speaker Bill Colburn to the graduating student managers. Colburn, who was a professor and die-hard sports fan at Michigan before moving into his current job as director of alumni relations at Connecticut, called on the crowd to get behind the team next season after this season's disap- pointments and controversy. "I'm worried about us because of compla- cency," Colburn said. "I'm worned about us not standing up for Michigan. It's time for us to stand up for the finest basketball program in the United States?' Fisher and the other two speakers from the team - seniors Nick Haratsaris and Ryan DeKuiper - were full of praise for the entire Michigan squad. "Only two teams in basketball are abletoend their season by cutting down a net, and we were one of them," Haratsaris said. DeKuiper's reminiscences were what one might expect of a Michigan native. "My personal favorite (memory was) stomp- ing Michigan State the last four times we played them,"he said. For his part, Fisher drew numerous chuckles from the crowd when he talked about his troops.
