"A lot of what we saw is what people wear to look presentable," Yankah said. "It is what you would see on the streets (in Africa) every day." Each individual fashion displays dif- ferent world influences and a mix of African culture, Yankah said. "Thousands of years of mixing .of cultures in Africa makes it hard to dif- ferentiate fashions into individual country's culture" he said. Yankah said the fashion attire was obtained mostly from parents of per- formers and ASA members. "It was so nice of people to let us use their clothes"Yankah said. "We all cher- ish all of our momentos from home" Another major part of the show was African dancing. LSA first-year stu- dent Reena Newton, ASA executive board member and a model in the show, said the Senegalese Dance Troope from Ann Arbor was a strength of the show. "Dancing is a way of representing Africa' Newton said. "In a way, (all the performers) are representatives of Africa." Nkosinathi Booi, an Ann Arbor resi- dent originally from South Africa, said the cultural dancing was his favorite part of the program. "I felt as if I was in Africa for these few hours,' Booi said. Other performers included story- teller Stephen Uche, who told African tales, and author Genevieve Yaa Gyasiwah, who read a poem. The crowd responded to many per- formers with enthusiasm. Many of the acts received standing ovations and overwhelming cheers. "Everyone showed a lot of spirit;" said John Zuzo, a parent of a performer. Members of ASA, a student group formed last semester, said theyhope the show will become an annual event. "We want the African presenceto be as visible as any other group on cam- pus "Yankah said. Yankah, who plans to graduate in May, said he hopes the group will con- tinue to have many African cultural events. "It's not a few clothes. It's not a fad," Yahkah said. "It's our heritage - it's our culture." CULT Continued from Page 1A house "want to make sure the value of the property, and of the rest of The Ranch, is not hurt by what happened there," Leggitt said. "These are very substantial people who want to turn a negative into a positive." Leggitt, an agent with Dyson & Dyson Real Estate Associates, one of the area's top realty companies, declined to name the pair but sai their offer was near the $1.6 million price set by owner Sam Koutchesfahani, who is set to be sentenced in July on tax eva- sion and fraud charges. As officials here seek to wrap up their investigation of the mass sui- cide, Sheriff's Department investiga- tors, aided by FBI computer experts, are reviewing the cult's computer files. Because if San Diego is a cul-de-sac of America, a city existing as a theme park, then tiny Rancho Santa Fe is its scrub-brushed, squeaky-clean center - its Disneyland, Magic Mountain and Six Flags combined. In Rancho Santa Fe, news is normal- ly made on the society pages, not in screaming headlines and worldwide sound bites about mass deaths and mental hospitals, crew-cutted cultists and aliens from another world. At the Ranch, uproars usually come in the form of some misguided move to paint all-too-revealing street numbers on the curbs in front of houses or a drive to allow joggers and walkers to venture onto the Country Club grounds. "We just want the whole world to go away and leave us alone, just like always'" said Blame Briggs, as he wait- ed for Easter services at the Village Community Presbyterian Church 'iear the heart of the village. Added another church-goer: "What gives people some solace here is that these people were just renters, not long- time residents.
