COMET
Continued from Page IA
comets is that they are what we call dirty
snowballs, ices and rocks, everything
from a decent-sized rock to dust, and the
ice binds the thing together," said Philip
Hughes, a University associate research
scientist in the field of astronomy.
The sun's presence heats up the
comet as it approaches the inner parts
of the solar system. "As it is heated by
the sun, gases and dusts are given off.
The solar wind and radiation pressure
from the sun push back the gases and
dust into the tail," Hughes said.
Miller questioned whether Hale-
Bopp will be the most brilliant comet
of this century. He said that the West
comet of March 1976 rivals Hale-
Bopp for the title "century's most bril-
liant."
"It's certainly equal to West," Miller
said. "West was a very spectacular
affair."
