Duderstadt launched the Michigan Mandate and the Michigan Agenda for Women, both of which aimed" to "increase the participation of underrep- resented minorities among students, fac- ulty and staff, while building a campus community which both valued and sus- tained diversity." But philosophy Prof. Carl Cohen, a vocal critic of preferences by race, called the University's admissions policies ille- gal and discriminatory. "The University professes a policy of non-discrimination by race;' Cohen said. "I support that 100 percent, but the admissions policies of the University are discriminatory." Vice Provost for Academic and Multicultural Affairs Lester Monts called affirmative action an important tool for achieving diversity. "California and Texas show that affir- mative action is at risk," Monts said, One of the forces fueling the debate about the implementation of these pro- grams is the Center for Individual Rights, a law firm in Washington, D.C. that sponsored both cases against the University of Texas and Washingt; Robert Alt, director of public ret~tins and education for the Center for Individual Rights, said segrcgatolists in America today and it is often arci- pated in and funded by federal agencies. "When you treat people clcarly difTer- ent on the basis of race, equal protection of the law is violated," Alt said. Should the lawsuit against the University of Washington be appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals, the possibili- ty of conflicting decisions rendered by the 9th and 5th Districts could force the U.S. Supreme Court to re-examine the constitutionality of affirmative actibi. Since taking office in February, University President Lee Bollinger has reaffirmed the University's commitment to diversity, calling the Hopwood deci- sion a threat to diversity. "Having students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, representing a wide range of perspectives and tal- ents, is critically important not only for instilling a positive sense ofcom- munity within and cyon the University, but also for creatifig the most vital intellectual and education- al atmosphere," Bollinger said. "Racial and ethnic diversity is axcriti- cal component of this broader goal." STAYING FOR SPRINGH? FIND A SUBLET IN THE CLASSIFIEDS ABLE CHILDCARE 3 afternoons, 5 & 8 yr. old boys. Wilkins said the challenges of diversity are evident at colleges and universities, which often respond to these difficulties inappropriately. "I don't think it's enough to just pull people on campus and say, 'Okay, that's enough, we've satisfied our diversity requirement,"' Wilkins said. University of Toronto mathenatics Prof. Chandler Davis, who was fired from the University after the investiga- tions, was honored at the lecture. "I think it was a very good thing that (Wilkins) was immersed back into the University community again, even if it was only for a very short time," hesaid.
