Sister Nirmala, second from left, Is shown with Mother Teresa, seated, and other
nuns at the headquarters of Missionaries of Charity, Calcutta, in November 1996.

CALCUTTA, India (AP) - An ail-
ing Mother Teresa handed over her
global mission yesterday to an Indian-
born nun who converted to Roman
Catholicism after being inspired by the
works of the Nobel laureate.
Sister Nirmala, born of a priestly
Hindu caste, was selected by a conclave
of 120 nuns who deliberated for eight
weeks before reaching a consensus.
"Now I am happy," said Mother
Teresa, 86, who guided the mission for
a half-century. "Pray, so that she can
continue God's work."
Sister Nirmala, now known as
Mother Nirmala, immediately became
head of the Missionaries of Charity,
which has more than 4,000 nuns and
runs 517 orphanages, homes for the
poor, AIDS hospices and other charity
centers around the world.
"I am in dreamland right now" the
63-year-old nun said.
Mother Teresa and her successor
appeared on the second-floor balcony of
Mother House, the mission's headquar-
ters in downtown Calcutta. Behind them
a cloth banner proclaimed: "We love our
dearest Mother Nirmala." Flowers and.
garlands were delivered to the front door,
where the sisters were cloistered.
Yesterday's election is unlikely to
change the character of the order.
However, Mother Nirmala will have to
work hard to get the access to world lead-
ers that helped Mother Teresa, winner of
the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her work
with the poor, raise millions of dollars.

NCAA

but at the same time the University
could do nothing with the facts of the
story based on the unnamed sources.
"The media works by different rules
of evidence than official investigations,"
Bollinger said. "I'm personally comfort-
able as a First Amendment scholar with
the media reporting using unnamed
sources. I think responsible journalism
can rely on unnamed sources.
"But we cannot launch official inves-
tigations whenever the media report on
the basis of unnamed sources. In my
mind, the rules for each of the two are
completely different."
Earlier this week the University
admitted to two NCAA violations
involving Martin. Martin was allegedly
present at the home of Michigan center
Robert Traylor while Michigan coach
Steve Fisher made an official recruiting
visit. Martin also reportedly gave a
birthday cake to an unindentified
Michigan player after practice.
However, it was also reported that
Martin attempted to"put down a $1,400
security deposit for an apartment for
two Michigan players and send airline
tickets to family members of players.
Along with the alleged payments, these
are major NCAA violations that could
land Michigan in serious trouble, with
penalties including probation and
scholarship reductions.
Michigan's report to the NCAA said
Fisher "thwarted" Martin's offers
regarding the security deposit and the
airline tickets, thus avoiding the viola-
tion of any NCAA rules.
"We're committed to having a pro-
gram with no violations whatsoever,"
Bollinger said. "There has been a
thorough investigation by the
Athletic Department and it has
turned up only minor violations. Our
principle should be we will investi-
gate thouroughly any credible allega-
tions."
Molin said he is most upset that the
burden of proof in the investigation has
now been shifted to the players.
"These kids have to prove them-
selves innocent," Molin said.
MEETING

Detroit Free Press were credible.
"If we knew who this was coming
from then we can assess if it's credible,"
Bollinger said. "Since it's anonymous,
it's a very complicated matter and puts
the University in a very difficult posi-
tion."
An unnamed source in the Detroit
Free Press article claimed basketball
players received cash envelopes hidden
inside cake boxes and channeled money
through players' girlfriends.
"It's scary," said Regent Andrea
Fischer Newman (R-Ann Arbor).
"These allegations are very scary. I
hope we can get to the bottom of these
allegations and prove that they are false.
But obviously the Free Press has some-
one talking:'
Vice President for University
Relations Walter Harrison said the
University first heard of these allega-
tions in June of last year, and at this
point the University has thoroughly
investigated all of the allegations. He
added that there is one charge in the
paper that he had not come across
before. Harrison woul4 not say what
that allegation is.
"I would like more time to make sure
what was in the paper yesterday has all
been looked into," Harrison said.
"There was one pathway of this
money that I don't recall hearing
about:' Harrison said. "We are commit-
ted to following up on all leads. We all
want to be absolutely certain that we are
running this program with equal
integrity as any in the country."
Newman said she wishes newspapers
could assist in the investigation because
it is difficult for the University to com-
municate with sources that don't want
to be identified.
"If there are any allegations then they
must be looked into; Newman said. "We
have to do a thorough investigation, but I
just wish that the newspapers could work
with us. It would make it a lot easier.
