Tiffany Culy, a Saline High School honors student, was in critical condi- Son yesterday and breathing with the help of a respirator. University Medical Center spokesperson Mike Harrison said the donor liver was expected to arrive at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti about 8 p.m. More tests will be performed on the donor o-gan'after it arrives; gand if it is cbmpatible, surgeons were to performi '"he transplant operation last night, arrison said. "It was biopsied off-site and the results look pretty promising," he said. Harrison said he did not know where the donor organ originated. h Jessica Culy, Tiffany's 20-year-old sister, said the family also was not told where the donor organ was locat- ed but was encouraged by news of the find. "It has been biopsied unlike the other ,revious livers" she said. "We found out that it's healthy. Her chances are good that her body won't reject this liver'' a Jessica said her sister's condition had remained stable yesterday, three days after doctors said the teen-ager had just 24 hours to live. "She's still holding her own," Jessica said. "This is a miracle that she's fought this long." On Monday night, one potential donor liver turned out to be unusable, she said. The teen-ager's father, David Culy, said three other potential donor livers had proven incompati- ble. "Her condition is critical, and her chances are slim without a transplant," said Dr. Jeffrey Punch, attending sur- geon. "But we don't know how long she has." Tiffany's liver failed over the span of just one week. She was hospitalized last week and diagnosed Saturday with Wilson's disease. That rare recessive genetic disorder damages the liver by impeding its ability to excrete copper. Shared-responsibili bill clears state Senate, 37-0 LANSING (AP) - Children of divorced parents could find themselves splitting their time more evenly between their parents under a bill that assumes that shared parental responsi- bility should be ordered. The bill, similar to one that passed the Senate in the last session but failed to clear the House, passed the Senate yesterday. Sponsored by Sen. Joel Gougeon (R-Bay City), the bill was sent to the House on a 37-0 vote. "Fathers who were merely paying child support to the custodial wife were becoming disconnected with their chil- dren," Gougeon said, citing studies on the issue. "Research shows that both par- ents' (involvement) is best for the child." The measure would create a legal presumption of shared parental respon- sibility and provide for parenting plans in child custody cases. Shared parental responsibility would mean a court order requiring parents to share the decision-making authority and responsibility for the child and that the child would have to live with each parent for a certain length of time. It would not require that the child live with each parent for an equal length of time, however. Now, joint custody can be requested by either parent and the judge must co- sider it. Under the bill, the court wqujl have to order shared responsibiji y unless it determined such an arrang ment was not in the child's best interest( However, the parents could agree to a parenting plan other than shared responsibility, and the court would have to order it unless it found it not in the child's best interests. .
