The "One Earth Tour," began in January and continues through March, will take this remarkable Japanese percussion com- pany to more than 20 cities. "We are very much looking forward to coming back (to Ann Arbor)," said. Takashi Akamine, Kodo's company manager. "We have performed here many times ... it is becoming a tradi- tion.' Kodo, which means both "Heartbeat" and Tonigh "Children of the Tickets Drum," was found- ed in 1971. A typical day on Sado Island consists of intensive study, practice and exercise to maintain the company members' sta- mina needed for their demanding per- formances and rigorous performance schedule. Kodo tours approximately eight months each year. After this tour "we go back home and start a domestic tour in Japan," Akamine said. The "One Earth Tour" performances feature nine works. Among the pieces are "The Hunted," originally composed for J. F. Lawton's film with the same title, and "O-Daiko," a piece played on the o-daiko, a huge, decorated 800- pound instrument carved from the trunk of a single tree. Four female perform- ers join the once all-male ensemble of drummers, and are featured in the piece "Yae-No-Furyu-" Although the company is widely rec- ognized for its traditional Japanese drums, Kodo also relies on a variety of The drummers of Kodo will perform tonight and tomorrow at Power Center.
