10- The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, February 12, 1997 GUEVARA Continued from Page 9 "I want to win a national champi- onship." Michigan has enjoyed newfound success under Guevara, starting the season with five straight wins before losing to top-ranked Stanford by three points. The Wolverines entered the Big Ten portion of their schedule with an 8-1 mark, but have lost six of their last seven to fall to 12-9. The 12 victories are the most since the 1989-90 season, when Michigan qualified for the NCAA tournament. The appointment was the realiza- tion of a lifelong dream for Guevara, who is a Michigan native. "Growing up in the State of Michigan, you grow up a Wolverine," Guevara said. "I always dreamed of being the head coach at the University of Michigan." Several players and many other Michigan coaches were present for the announcement yesterday, includ- ing men's basketball coach Steve Fisher, who canceled a recruiting appointment to attend. Guevara acknowledged the support of the coaching staff. "It's a very supportive atmos- phere" Guevara said. "It's a family atmosphere. I think it's great when you bring recruits on campus and you can walk into (Fisher's) office and he's right there." While the support of the staff is important, Guevara has the backing of a more important group - her players. Both junior guard Molly Murray and sophomore guard Ann Lemire were on hand to support their new coach and emphasize the change in attitude that she brings with her. "All of us wanted her back," Murray said. "Nobody loves to run their guts out or anything (in prac- tice), but you're doing it for some- body who gives you so much in return. It pays off." Even with the excitement of the announcement, Guevara was already concentrating on the upcoming game against Penn State, a team that has already beaten the Wolverines. "Believe me, I'm happy," Guevara said. "But I'm thinking about Penn State on Friday and what we have to do to beat them." OVERDUE Continued from Page 9 National championships: In women's basketball, Michigan has none. Guevara promises future Wolverines that if they come to play for Michigan, they will have a chance to contend for one. "We want to win a national champi- onship here," Guevara said. "Any of those juniors and sophomores in high school in the State of Michigan -if you want to get the best education in the world and be part of a growing basket- ball team that will win a national cham- pionship - then the University of Michigan is the place to be." She has already signed four recruits for next season, including two of the top three players in the state. Guevara has helped the Wolverines accomplish all of this while still bearing the interim title. She has had the perma- nent position for one day. The question now becomes, "How long will it take?" How long will it take to turn MichigaiO into a Big Ten champion for the first time? How long will it take to turn Michigan into a perennial winner? And finally, how long will it take for the Wolverines to capture their first national title, fulfilling Guevara's promise? These are questions that the Wolverines are probably glad to face, instead of wondering who will be their coach. No one knows the answer to these questions, but the Michigan women's basketball program took a big step toward answering them when Roberson removed "interim" from Guevara's title. Guevara spent 10 successful seasons at Michigan State before finally coming to Michigan. So, what took you so long, Sue? i FRESHMEN Continued from Page 9 Tenley Hardin also shows equal promise in comparison with the other freshmen on the team. She is adequate in doubles and sin- gles, and was a district finalist and doubles champion as a high school senior in Florida. The Michigan's women's tennis team looks as though it is on the upswing with coach Bitsy Ritt's new additions to the team. The four freshmen are proving that age is only a number. They are show- ing that they are mentally tough and that they will not defeat themselves. They are playing a game they really seem to enjoy. So remember the names Tenley Hardin, Brooke Hart, Danielle Lund and Erryn Weggenman - because they are here to stay. THE END Party's People Poll presentsI( MARGARET MYERS/Daily Sue Guevara hasn't been sitting on her haunches this season - she has coached the Wolverines to their best record since the 1989-90 season. i c Nobody prepares you like KAPLAN:, Kaplan has the most complete arsenal of test prep tools available.
