By Katie Piona Daily Staff Reporter Some members of the Michigan Student Assembly are trying to give students a louder voice in Ann Arbor's city government. Student representatives will soon have voting rights on several Ann Arbor city council committees because of an initia- tive by MSA's Campus Governance Committee. "If this is an interest, we certainly need to provide for the opportunity for that interest," said Ann Arbor Mayor Ingrid Sheldon. Sheldon said the responsibilities of each student appointment will vary, depending on the committee. "Every (committee) is going to be a little different," Sheldon said, adding that not all student postions will give students voting rights. "I see this as strengthening the rela- tionship between the community and the University," said LSA Rep. Michael Nagrant. "We should have an equal voice, or a partial voice." Working with Sheldon, Nagrant and LSA senior Andrew Wright spent recent weeks securing appointments for students on the council's committees. "It's something we've been trying to do for a number of years," Wright said. "The mayor was pretty receptive to the idea." CGC will recommend students to Sheldon, based on applications sub- mitted to the committee this week. "We're able to take the process and bring it to students," Nagrant said, adding that many students probably do not know they could have an appoint- ment to a council committee. The mayor will take the CGC selections and make her recommen- dations to city council for their approval. "(The) mayor has not let us know of plans at this point, but people have to understand that city council (members) only can vote on potential appoint- ments," city councilmember Tobi Hanna-Davies (D-1st Ward) said. "The mayor is the only one who has the power to propose a name for appointment." Wright said the mayor appointed him to a previous committee, and from that experience he saw a need for more stu- dents to have the same opportunity. Nagrant said students have secured 1I spots on various committees. Hanna-Davies said she thinks the appointments will create a beneficial relationship between the city and stu- dents because students have a stake in many Ann Arbor issues. "Even though there is a lot of diver- sity on campus, I imagine that most (city councilmembers) will welcome these proposed appointments,' Hanna- Davies said. "We want people who are willing to do a good job and who have experience with the issues they are dealing with." Nagrant said students who have com- mittee appointments will be active for the committee's entire term, which varies in length for each committee. "We'll find students that can meet the time constraints," Nagrant said, adding that if a student does not fulfill the full term, CGC will recommend another student to Sheldon. Students are eligible to sit on com- mittees that include the Huron River Watershed Council and the Citizens' Advisory Council to the Downtown" Development Authority. DDA mem- bers must be residents of the South University Avenue area. Any student is eligible to apply for a city council appointment. Applications are available in the MSA office and must be returned by 5 p.m. Friday. -Daily Staff Reporter Megan Exley contributed to this report. lp% .:7 7177- SPRING BREAK PANAMA City Beach Florida. LANSING (AP) - Months after the federal minimum wage was boosted and the state House passed a similar increase for the state wage, it appears the Republican-run Senate is finally ready to go along. The Michigan Senate opens debate this week on a bill to- increase the state wage, now $3.35 an hour, to $4.75 an hour on July 1. It would go to $5.15 on Sept. 1, 1998, under a bill unanimously passed Thursday by the But Republicans are expected to oppose major changes, especially since business objects to any wage increase at all.
