AIDS Continued from Page 1 are the fastest growing groups to con- tract HIV/AIDS, and that one-quarter of all new infections occur in youths between the ages of 13 and 20. "A major focus is youth, from mid- dle school on up through college, since not only are they a risk category, but they are the next generation with whom we need to break down the barriers of discrimination, misinformation, fear and bigotry," Lieber said. Erin Heisenbert, Engineering first- year student, said that while it is good for the University to promote AIDS edu- cation and awareness, some students will not be influenced by the message. "I think the events are a good idea because anybody helped by them is a good thing" Heisenbert said. "But the people that take the time to go to the events probably already have safe behavior' Lieber said the AIDS Memorial Quilt will influence visitors because of its intimacy. "The quilt puts a name dn the end- less statistics;'"he said. "It gives the stu- dents a feeling like they know someone who has died from AIDS because of the life stories that the quilt possesses' But LSA junior Nina Uppal remained skeptical about the degree of the quilt's impact. "I think it will touch people, but I don't know if they will think that they could be one of those people." Tomorrow: 'Minority issues and AIDS," 3 p.m., Track and Tennis Building Moniday: "Sex Matters,' pre- sented by Jay Friedman, 8 p.m., U-Club, Michigan Union Tuesday: "Advances in Treatment for HIV/A IDS," 4 p.m., School of Public Health 11 Wednesday: "Safer Sex Workshops," 7 and 9 p.m., LGBPO Lounge, Michigan Union Thursday - Sunday:' "The Ann Arbor AIDS Memorial Quilt", 6:30 p.m., Track and Tennis Building Continued from Page 1 because there is not sufficient evidence for them to prosecute." Wayne State University Law School Prof. Edward Wise, who originally filed a brief for the ACLU in Baker's defense, said that although Baker's dismissal has been a highly publicized First Amendment case, the case did not even go into the depths of constitutional law. "You can uphold the dismissal of all of the charges without ever even getting to the First Amendment;' Wise said. "The prosecution should never have brought the case in the first place' Wise said the case will not go down in the record books as a groundbreak- ing decision. "It starts out looking like a land- mark, but I don't think it is," Wise said. "But it is an indirect victory for the First Amendment.' Although the appellate court upheld the dismissal, U.S. District Attorney Saul Green has not said whether he will appeal the case again either to the appellate court or to the U.S. Supreme CourtU "Mr. Green is reviewing the deci- sion, and he will decide if their needs to be further review" said Sandy Pallazo, a spokesperson for Green. Baker was suspended indefinitely in 1995 by then-University President James Duderstadt for writing a pornographic story on an Internet newsgroup, which was read by a University alum. The victim in the story had the same full name as a woman in Baker's Japanese class. The case also involved e-mail mes- sages Baker sent to a friend in Canada outlining plans of molesting and torturing women. Laurie Burns, director of the University's Information and Technology Division, said Baker's sus- pension was not due to a violation of ITD policies that warn against putting a story in certain areas. Subsequently, Baker was imprisoned for one month. The U.S. District Court in Detroit dismissed the case in 1995. Baker, who is currently an under- graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh, would not comment on the recent decision. $1000'S POSSIBLE reading books. Pani-'rne. At home.
