"Having as mini- mal depth as we have, not getting sig- nificant injuries is important. "And in order for us to play the rest of the season, it's going to have to stay that way." Michigan coach Steve Fisher, like Taylor, chooses not to worry about such factors out of his control. "You worry about coaching the players you have," he said. "There's too many things to worry about, and worry about if a guy's going to twist his ankle getting on or off the bus - I don't think any of us worry about that." Aside from junior Jerod Ward's knee troubles, injuries have not been much of a problem for Michigan during the past few years. So the Wolverines hope a medical emergency will not become a reality in Ann Arbor the way it has in Happy Valley. It's not often that a win over a last- place opponent gives a team much to dwell on. But as the Wolverines pore over last night's box score, and look at the teams' records, they should thank their lucky stars things aren't the other way around. Because they could be. And very, very easily. - Will McCahill can be reached over e-mail at wmcc@umich.edu. Good or great? Blue wrestlers will try to ure it out aanst Spartatonight By Evan Braunstein Daily Sports Writer There is a thin line between being a good team and a great team. Usually the difference lies in winning close match- es. Lately, the Michigan wrestling team is having trouble in that area. Saturday, the 12th-ranked Wolverines defeated a much weaker Northwestern team by a single point. In that match, there were three bouts decided by two points or less. Michigan wrestlers lost all three of them. On Jan. 12, the Wolverines faced No. 4 Penn State and lost 23-13. That con- test contained six matches decided by two points or less. Michigan wrestlers lost five of those. In a sport where one bout can mean the difference between a team victory or defeat, the Wolverines haven't been wrestling like a great team. As the team travels to rival Michigan State for a tough conference match today, Michigan coach Dale Bahr is searching for answers. "I don't know what it's going to take to start winning those close matches," he said. "I think the kids have to believe in themselves. Maybe because they've lost a couple now they're start- ing to second guess themselves. But we've got to find some way to win those close matches. Lots of times it's pride." Against Michigan State, Bahr said he will be looking for his team to show some improvement. "They aren't so good at 126, 134, and 142 pounds' he said. "We've got to win those three weights classes. Then we've got (tri-captains Jeff) Catrabone, (Bill) Lacure and (Airron) Richardson, and we'll be in good shape. It's going to come down to who wins the close matches.' The Wolverines are counting on Lacure, Catrabone and Richardson to not only win, but win big. "(Michigan State's) got three real good kids, and we got three real good kids," Bahr said. "I guess Airron, Bill and Cat got to go out after majors, tech KRISTEN SCHAEFER/Daily Michigan wrestler Bill Lacure and his teammates hope to turn their luck around In close matches. The Wolverines are looking to tri-captains Lacure, Airron Richardson and Jeff Catrabone to reverse that downward spiral tonight in East Lansing. falls or pins. Michigan State's got three kids that are ranked in the top three or four in the country, and they're going to go after those.' Unfortunately, the experience needed to win tight matches can be hard to come by in a team that starts seven underclassmen. "The younger guys are losing the close matches, but even the older guys are doing it too" Catrabone said. "Hopefully, our practices are going to pay off for us and in the next couple of weeks you're going to. see a big improvement.' Lacure's remarks echoed those of Catrabone and his coach. "Mentally, we've got to get confi- dent" he said. "You can see when some of the guys are wrestling, they get ten- tative- afraid to lose. I do it too." "We've just got to believe in our- selves. We have the talent to be a great team.' Last year, the Wolverines hosted Michigan State on Jan. 31. At the time, they had a record of 6-4-1. After losing a close two-point match to the Spartans, Michigan rattled off six straight victo- ries to close out the season. This year the Wolverines are 5-3 and in dire need of a spark to jumpstart the team. The good news for the Wolverines is not only that they lead the overall series between the two schools by a record o1 49-31-4, but Michigan also won its last road meet against Michigan State, dur- ing the 1994-95 season. .:U ::v::i:<:?:i;);4i v::?:::.::i"ii:"I :....:.....%' ii?:r:i~~i)):) ):: i.i ?; Spock In the Diaspora" Wednedy, January29, 1997 8:W pm, HillAuditorium University of Michigan Tickets: Hillel & Ticketmaster $10 (students, $5) Call (313)763-TKTS or (313)769-0500 to charge by phone.
