AEDSTART tinued from Page IA Tolkaw said. "You really understand what's going On in this country when you hear it from someone who's experienced it firsthand." Kozol praised several doctors who he thought sin- cerely cared about their patients, but said he is frus- trated by the bureaucratic and impersonal approach he has noticed among many young doctors today, particularly those in the inner cities. "I hear a lot of young people in your position and *y speak in maddeningly abstract terms," he said. "The needs of today are literal and not abstract - the work needs to be done at ground zero where people lead their day-to-day existence. We need NATION/WORLD The Michigan Daily - Monday, January 27, 1997 - 7A 'r more saints and rebels right on the field of battle whether you hold a crucifix or stethoscope, whether you put your faith in science or God." Kozol expressed frustration with fellow liberals who reminisce about their "'60s credentials," but who have since withdrawn from the struggle for equality, and whose sympathies for the poor have grown tepid. Yet Kozol said he believes programs like the Medstart conference serve to invigorate communities. "I see programs like Medstart as the kind of thing that energizes the struggle - the kind of thing that brings liberals back to life. It's not pol- icy-driven, it's not detached, it's very specific. It deals with the real-life problems of children in our cities now." NCAA Conlinued from Page 1A 0 Greater enrollment of student athletes in vari- aiiscolleges and schools of the University to reduce poncentration of athletes in one unit. The major- of student athletes are enrolled in the Division of Kinesiology. P A study to examine the role of academics for student athletes, so it aligns with the mission of the Division of Kinesiology. This falls into the current discussion of changing the status of Kinesiology into a "School.' Increased recruitment and development of women and minority coaches and athletic adminis- trators by conducting vigorous national searches. In 96, of the 124 members of the Athletic apartment personnel, 34 were female and 12 were black. In six weeks, the University will be notified about its NCAA status. The University's assessment can fall into one of three categories: complete certifica- tion, certification with conditions or denial of certi- fication. "Complete certification means there are no major problems with the program," said Carolyn Claude, NCAA compliance representative. "Certified with conditions means there are some areas with problems and the school needs to address them within a certain time period. Schools who are denied certification have major areas where problems exist and they have no plan to address these problems." If certified, the Athletic Department will have to adhere to the set of principles to which the NCAA has agreed. If the University fails to meet these guidelines, it can be sanctioned or dropped from NCAA membership.
