She empha- sized dedicating time and effort toward service, especially during this week, which is normally designated for speeches and discussions. In its third year of "Acting on the Dream," Project Serve took the oppor- tunity of a day off from classes to organize students and staff in joining communities in the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Detroit areas. Close to 400 volunteers worked this year on projects ranging from the Volunteer Reading Program in West Quad to Latino Family Services in Detroit. Students served food, did paperwork, painted doors, played checkers, read stories and tried to accommodate the wide variety of work to be done. As one participant said, "It's hard to say what kind of impact we had, if any, after three hours one after- noon. But working let me see that there is more that can be done -a real application ;N of the talk of values and change that flows like air around this University, especially on MLK Day."
