LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, January 22, 1997 - 7 *IVERSITY Continued from Page :L self. "One thing that was definitely on our minds yesterday was the need for a heightened awareness of what Martin Luther King Jr. really did for people of color," Salas said. "I think that students of color here at the University need to realize how much ey are benefitting from the actions f King and other activists who came before us. "Everyone needs to be aware of the traditions of activism and what these figures had to endure in order for us to be here today' she said Student participation in yesterdays protest was fairly positive, organizers at Angell Hall said. "For the time we have been here, many people have been inquiring about the 'Day Without Diversity,"' wrote Black Student Union member Delano White on pieces of scrap paper. "We hope that the University will not ignore us and adhere to its promise to make the campus a place where everyone's needs can be met." Black Student Union speaker Jeanne Harris, who volunteered at Angell Hall, wrote that she thought the symbolic gagging was a successful approach. "People are noticing and are talk- ing about the issues of race, both those who support and oppose our methods. This was our goal," Harris wrote. "My hope is that whether or not people agree with our methods, the message will be heard. We will not be silent or invisible in the U-M com- munity." Many students said they were not aware of the "Day Without Diversity" before they went to Angell Hall yester- day. "As an iArab American student myself, I find it a little troublesome that I was not aware of this protest before this morning," said LSA junior Susie Nakley. "Sometimes I feel discriminated against, too, but I am not really sure if this protest is for all minorities or just African Americans. Who are students of color in this case?" Nakley said she wished she had known about the "Day Without Diversity" beforehand. "Maybe they should have handed out fliers last Friday, too," Nakely said. "That way more people might have been encouraged to attend the MLK Day events instead of sleeping in. Organizers of yesterday's protest said the event was not funded by any specific campus. organization, but rather that supporters paid for the 3,000 fliers. Salas said she hoped the University administration will take yesterday's protest as another sign to continue the support and increase the popula- tion of students of color here at Michigan. "Steps currently being taken are good," Salas said. "But no one should be satisfied until the climate for stu- dents of color is more acceptable. If it was acceptable, protests like these wouldn't be necessary in the first place.' FUNDS Continued from Page 1 of the University's efforts to promote diversity. "I'm happy that President Neal looked into this problem and is propos- ing it," said Alianza member Alejandra Montes. "Now, to what extent the University is going to carry out this proposal, I seriously doubt." Montes cited the low retention rate of minority students as a problem that needs to be addressed by the University. "It's really hard to create a program for diversity especially when the retention rate of students is not there,"she said.
