About 30 Democrats received pay raises at the start of the year, a review of House salaries by the Lansing State Journal showed. Many of them also got raises on Oct. 1, the start of the state's spending year, the newspaper reported Saturday. Democrats said the raises were justi- fied, due to promotions in some cases and reflecting the higher work load that comes with majority status. "As a majority party, we set the agen- da and we determine a lot more than a minority party,' said Andi Brancato, chief spokesperson for House Speaker Curtis Hertel (D-Detroit). She received a 16-percent pay raise to $63,000 but her salary is still below that of her counterpart in the Republican Party. Some Republicans say some of the salaries for the House Democratic staffers are too high. "We never as a Republican majori- ty had any employee in excess of $100,000, and I don't think we had anyone in excess of $85,000," said Rep. Frank Fitzgerald (R-Grand Ledge). SERVICE Continued from Page 1A He said he was excited to see a wid range of participants. Black, white and Indian American students congregated at Angell Hall before they went to their sites. "When we have so many people and such a diverse crowd, it's a good thing to see," Walker said. Activities included projects involv- ing education, children, poverty, the elderly, and gay, lesbian and bisexual issues. Dean of Students Royster Harper addressed the volunteers before they left for the afternoon activities. Students said the day's events were- beneficial because they didn't interferd - with class, and still allowed students to meet different people while helping those in need Along with Project Serve and the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, sponsors included the Black Volunteer Network, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the College of Engineering and the School of Public Health. KEYNOTE Continued from Page 1A what Martin Luther King's dream is today." Woods said Berry "is a role model, not only for women of color. but for all people." Taking a jab at what she deemed "new-style poverty pimps," Berry criti- cized private corporations that try to profit by obtaining contracts to admin- ister the new state welfare programs. She also cited businesses for trying td get tax credits by terminating one worker and hiring another who is on welfare. Ann Arbor resident Chibu Ozor said he enjoyed Berry's provocative comr , ments. "I think it was great;' he said. "Very balanced. It wasn't running down anybody or putting anyone up." Berry closed her remarks by asking each person to do one thing each day for the rest of their lives toward the cause of social justice. She suggested praying, tutoring a child or volunteer- ing at a soup kitchen as ways to pro- mote change. Berry currently teaches history and law at the University of Pennsylvania. She has published a number of books on legal issues, race relations and women's rights. Her most recent book is titled "The Politics of Parenthood."
