This weekend, Michigan's sister was beautiful. Repeatedly, the Michigan hockey team had its hands tied, and repeatedly, it over- came the obstacles. And there was no greater challenge this weekend than a shorthanded situa- tion while the Wolverines were down a goal to Bowling Green. Forty seconds after Michigan forward Matt Herr scored to bring Michigan within one, he put Michigan in a difficult situation. Herr was sent to the penalty box for tripping, and senior center John Madden seized the shorthanded opportunity. He drove up the middle of the ice, received a centering pass from center Bobby Hayes and knocked home the equalizer. "(The goal) wasn't much on my part," Madden said. "It was all (Hayes) and (forward Chris Fox's) doing." While modesty is Madden's nature, Bowling Green coach Buddy Powers did- n't cut corners with his praise for the shorthanded star. "He's one of the best players in the country," Powers said. "He scores big goals." Michigan went from having its hands tied to having the game tied. For Madden, the late goal was not an aberration. After leading the nation in shorthanded goals with 10 last season, he is off to a quick start once again. He has been scoring shorthanded all season long. Madden leads Michigan with four shorthanded goals - a crucial statistic for Michigan. "Any game you look at, shorthanded and power play (goals) make a differ- ence," Herr said. Michigan coach Red Berenson agrees. "Our team's not going to lie down and die because we're shorthanded," Berenson said. "There may be times (when) it can work to your advantage. The other team thinks it has an edge and all of the sudden a guy like Madden scores a shorthanded goal.' The Falcons fell into that trap, and Madden made them pay. "We don't want to rely on shorthanded goals, but just because you're a man down, doesn't mean you give up," Berenson said. Friday night's 5-1 victory over Michigan State was also a direct result of Michigan's efforts when it was a man short. "We drew some penalties because of our (style of) play," Michigan State coach Ron Mason said. "But we couldn't put it away on our power play." Eleven times, Michigan handed the Spartans an extra skater, and 10 of those times, Michigan killed off the penalties. And on one of those kills, Madden made a statement. Michigan's top penalty-killing unit connected at 18:29 of the first period to give Michigan a two-goal lead. Once again, it was Herr and Madden doing the damage. Herr slid a pass in front of the net that Madden banged home. The goal gave Michigan a 3-1 lead, a cushion it would not relinquish. But Michigan would not have to be so concerned with shorthanded situations if it could keep its men on the ice. The Wolverines tallied 20 penalties for the three periods and racked up an astounding 70 minutes in the penalty box. "(The Wolverines) were doing the things they want to do" Mason said. Michigan captain Brendan Morrison feels that the special teams spark the rest of the squad. "When we're working hard it shows up in our special teams,' Morrison said. "We feed off the penalty kills.... And it was contagious to the whole team. Even if their hands were tied. This weekend, Michigan's John Madden continued his Inexplicable tear on the penalty-killing unit, scoring two more shorthanded goals. A: 5,016.j XXX4 fj .C .Y ยข fJtfp h' Falcons fold, By Dan Stiliman Daily Sports Writer BOWLING GREEN - Rarely do things work out the way they're supposed to. This past weekend was no exception. After last weekend's melee between the Michigan and Bowling Green hockey teams, Saturday's rematch at Bowling Green had the potential to get out of hand. On Friday night, the Wolverines hosted Michigan State in what should have been a clean game between two top-10 squads. Surprise, the complete opposite occurred. The Michigan-Michigan State game turned into another episode of Fight Night at Yost with 122 total penalty minutes, while the Wolverines and Falcons played a hard-hitting, but disciplined, game with only 28 penalty minutes. "I think the fans and the reporters might have been the only ones expecting problems (Saturday night)," Bowling Green coach Buddy Powers said. "We talked in our meeting (Saturday) about that: No bull. Just play hockey." Michigan coach Red Berenson was encouraged by the behavior of the teams. "Both teams played with better emotional control and realized that it's not worth it to do something stupid," Berenson said. "I think our team has real- ized it, and hopefully more teams will realize it. It was a better hockey game tonight (compared to Friday night)."' The Spartans evidently had not reached the same conclusion as of Friday night. Midway through the second period, Michigan right wing Justin Clark got cross-checked into the Michigan State goal by Michigan State's Sean Berens. No sooner did the three come to a sliding stop when Michigan State's Richard Keyes came up whaling away on Clark with punch after punch. Meanwhile, Michigan State goaltender Chad Alban was standing out near his blue line, motion- ing toward Michigan goaltender Marty Turco, who had skated out to center ice, to come over and drop his gloves. "Originally, the only reason I did come out of my net was cause I saw (Alban) out of his net:'"Thrco said. "Emotions were running high, and I didnt want to get in there unnecessarily. Michigan State coach Ron Mason expressed his disappointment with Alban. "I didn't like it. I don't think that's part of the game," Mason said. "And as far as I'm concerned, Turco didn't have to come up to the red line either. He stays down in the goal and nothing happens?' Following the brouhaha, referee Matt Shegos dis- qualified four players - Michigan's Justin Clark and Chris Frescoln, and Michigan State's Richard Keyes and Brad Hodgins - for Saturday's games. Turco received a two minute unsportsmanlike penalty while Alban got the same time for roughing. "Both teams played hard. They played with a lot of emotion:' Berenson said. "I thought it was uncalled for - the skirmish at the end down near the goal." Michigan State's Richard Keyes and Michigan's Justin Clark were both tossed from Fiday's game because of this skirmish. They both had to sit out Saturday's games. MICHIGAN BOOK & SUPPLY Film Developing SUPER SALE! Color Print Film Developed & Printed. 1.99 12-15 exp. 20 24-36 exp.
