10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 15, 1996 SPARTANS Continued from Page 9 you. lk to be able to put your best foot -orward," Berenson said. "I know on paper we won't be able to, but on the ice our team has to respond. "We've got four regular players out of our lineup, and that's the weakest I can remember our team going into a game." With Muckalt and Botterill out, center John Madden's line will be the first line. Senior center Brendan Morrison, the remaining member of his line, will move down one and play between Matt Herr and Sean Ritchlin. "I haven't been playing up to my, expectations so far this year," Morrison said. "It's an opportunity for me to get back into the groove a bit, and for the younger guys too." Michigan will dress seven defensemen tonight, including Chris Fox, who may also see time at for- ward on a fourth line with freshman Andrew Merrick. Sophomore Craig Assenmacher or freshman walk-on Krikor Arman could complete the line. In 'the first game, against the Spartans, it was the Michigan defense that struggled to clear the puck out of its zone, including the moment right before the Spartans scord.the winning goal. "tknow we're going to have to dlay -',well defensively, period," Perenson said. "We give up five goals at Michigan State with Botterill and Muckalt. We can't give their the two-on-ones and odd-num- bered. rushes we gave them (last time)." Tomorrow, things could get ugly fast between the Wolverines and Falcons. While Berenson showed his players film this week that showed Crozier's injury was a result of a clean hit by Faulkner, there were other plays that caused tempers to flare. "It all started when I got speared in the front of the neck," Muckalt said after the game. "Just an absolutely gutless play. I'm not gonna knock the (officiating), but you can't let the game get out of hand like that." CCHA coordinator of officials Dave Fisher said last weekend's events will not affect the officiating tomorrow night. "Whatever happens (tomorrow) night happens on its own," Fisher said. "You referee the game at hand, not the one that happened again." As for who the officials will be, teams do not find out until game- time Fisher said. Roger Graff was the referee in Saturday's game. Before the third-period melee, the Falcons stayed with the Wolverines throughout the first two periods which ended in a 1-1 tie. Warren Luhning knocked in the game-win- ner with just under eight minutes left in the third period. Four minutes later, Botterill scored to secure the victory for the Wolverines. The Falcons have lost four straight in the CCHA after raising already high expectations with victories in their first two conference games. "We're going out there with the mindset that we're going to be disci- plined. That happened in the past, and it's pretty much done with now," Morrison said. "But if there's a chance to put a good, clean check on someone, then obviously we'll take advantage of that." Recent meetings 11/2/96 State 5, Michigan 4 Munn Ice Arena exploded when Bryan Adams scored on a goal that was deflected off Blake Sloan's stick to give Michigan State the winning goal in a see-saw battle with only 52 seconds left in the game. 3/15/96 Michigan 6, State 2 Michigan advanced to the CCHA championship game behind four first- period goals at Joe Louis Arena. It was Michigan's second straight one-goal loss, Michigan hockey - read all about it in SPORTSMonday Grade A NoteTakers are Seniors and Grad Students.
