'M' women's soccer season
finishes with loss to Wisconsin
By Josh Kleinbaum
Daily Sports Writer
The Michigan soccer team's season
ended Saturday with a 2-0 loss to 10th-
ranked Wisconsin in the semifinal round
of the Big Ten championship.
The Wolverines (4-4-1 Big Ten, 10-7-
3 overall), who advanced to the semi-
finals with a 2-1 victory over Ohio State
on Friday, were hurt by two goals in the
first 20 minutes of the game.
Wisconsin's first goal was allowed by
a controversial non-call. On the play,
Heather Willihnganz hit Michigan goalie
Jessica Jones while trying to take a shot,
and Jones was unable to get to the ball.
Wisconsin midfielder Heather Maier got
to the loose ball and kicked it into the
open net.
"Their first goal was kind of question-
able" Michigan coach Debbie Belkin
said. "That changed the whole complex-
ion of the first half.. For the rest of the
half, we were on the defensive."
Belkin didn't use the non-call as an
excuse, however.
"Wisconsin was dominating at that
time, anyway" she said.
Jones suffered a shoulder injury on the
play and had to come out of the game in
favor of senior Jori Welchans.
"Jori went in and did fine," Belkin
said. "She let up a goal, but it was no
fault of the goalkeeper. It was more of a
defensive lapse."
That second goal came seven minutes
later, when Willihnganz took a pass from
Lindsay Hoelter and shot it past
Welchans into the upper-left corner of
the net.
After that, both teams settled down
defensively, and no one scored for the
rest of the game.
"We needed to come out and fight
harder," Belkin said. "We did in the sec-
ond half, but we couldn't get anything in
the net."
Wisconsin (7-0-2, 14-3-2), the top-
seeded team in the tournament, barely
got by lowest-seeded Michigan State on
Friday in the opening round, 1-0.
"Wisconsin didn't have a great game
against Michigan State the first day, and
they must have said, 'Hey, we better get
going,"' Belkin said. "They came out
right from the start and pressured us.
They're a seasoned team with lots of
seniors, and they just came at us hard."
On Friday, fourth-seeded Michigan
earned its second-ever victory in the Big
Ten championship with a 2-1 win over
Ohio State.
The last time these two teams met, in
late September, Ohio State dominated '
the game, earning a 2-0 victory and
holding Michigan to only three shots,44
none of which were on goal. This time, it
was a different situation.
"The first time we played them, they
totally disrupted our style of play,"
Belkin said. "They had the wind the first
half, and they were just dumping long
balls into our defensive end, so we
couldn't get anything going. This time,
we knew what to expect."
Mari Hoff started off the scoring for
Michigan 23 minutes into the game after
beating a Ohio State defender and taking
a shot from five yards out. Ohio State
goalkeeper Nicole Morris got a piece of
the shot, but it still went in the net.
Six minutes into the second half,
senior Debbie Flaherty headed in Karen
Montgomery's corner kick to give the
Wolverines a 2-0 lead.
Ohio State, seeded fifth, added a little
excitement to the game when Jodie
Stranges beat Jones to narrow the lead to "
one goal with five minutes left, but the DAMIAN PETRESCU/Daily
Buckeyes did not strike again. The Michigan soccer team's season ended Saturday with a loss to Wisconsin, the top-seeded team In the post-season tourney.

For the Daily
The sky is the limit for Michigan
midfielder Mari Hoff and her young
teammates.
After this weekend's Big Ten tourna-
ment performance, Hoff and the rest of
the team returned home with mixed
emotions.
"We played really well in the first
game; I think we were anxious to prove
to Ohio State that we were better than
the last time we played them, and I was
glow the competition away
really fired up for that game," Hoff
said. "The second game was tough for
me, because I was sore from the previ-
ous game, and it was really cold."
Hoff enjoyed a productive first sea-
son for Michigan. Not only did she
pick up second team All-Big Ten hon-
ors, but she also tied the Michigan sin-
gle-season goal mark of eight set by
Kim Phillips in 1994.
"When I went out recruiting, I was
looking for the best players available,

with offense being a big focus," Coach
Belkin said. "Mari certainly fits that
bill, she has the ability to start our
attack in the mid-field and she is also a
great outside shooter and overall fin-
isher."
She displayed some of that skill by
chipping in the first goal in the
Michigan victory versus the Buckeyes
on Friday.
Unfortunately, Hoff and the rest of
her teammates could not muster much
in the way of offense versus No. 12
Wisconsin and fell to the Badgers in
their last game of the year.
"I just want to continue working
toward our team goal of winning the
Big Ten" Hoff said. "Statistics and
records are fine, but I want the team to
do well"
Hoff has been steady all year at a
position that does not always grab the
headlines.

former for the entire season, she knows
when to join the attack," Belkin said.
It is never too early to start prepara-
tion for next season, and Hoff and her
teammates will be doing just that.
"Mari and the rest of the team will
improve strength-wise for next year,"
Belkin said.
Hoff is no stranger to hard work
since she has been involved in;soccer
for a long time. Her development is an
ongoing process, one that should pay
dividends for the Wolverines in the
near future.
"Mari has proven herself to be a big-
time player, and she will only
improve," Belkin said. "I think this
league will have a good player to con-
tend with in the future'
