NATION/WORLD nesthesia has faced highs an The Washington Post Anesthesia, wrought by any drug that pro- duces partial or total loss of feeling, is 150 years old this year. The word was coined by Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, father of the famous jurist, to describe the use of ether, the first major gas to revolu- tionize surgery. To Holmes, the effect of ether was "anti-aesthetic"; that is, it worked against the sense of feeling. Long before the rise of ether, physicians uti- lized numerous agents to relax patients for the trauma of the blade. Opium was a favorite of the ancients, as were alcohol and the narcotic hemp. After oxygen and nitrogen were discovered in the late 1700s, nitrous oxide was used as an anesthetic. This so-called "laughing gas" was useful in surgery, but was effective only in minor operations. Invasive surgery would have to await the arrival of ether. Surgeon Crawford Long administered ether in an 1842 operation in Jefferson, Ga., its first recorded use in this country. But its existence was known long before that. Indeed, its name was bestowed by German chemist F.G. Frobenius in 1730. Ether's properties were described in medical literature two centuries ear lier by Prussian botanist Valerius Cordus asa combination of distilled sulfuric acid and alco hol, combining to produce a sweet and soporifi agent. Ether was not used as an anesthetic in th United States or Europe before Long's effort because physicians believed its effect, like tha of sleep-producing agents such as opium o alcohol, was unpredictable. Moreover, surgeons had not yet considere the ease of operations with the patient asleep an NEED DEPENDABLE person to help 2:30- TUTOR-ELEMENTARY ED.
