The Michigan D RECORDS Continued from Page 8 Hammerhead Duh, The Big City Amphetamine Reptile Hammerhead rockets out at you like a 3-D porno. Harsh and melodic with- out seeming insincerely pretentious about it, they dish out some catchy songs that get into your head. With drums and a bass that rumbles like thunder on some tracks as a back- ground for low-end guitars and vocals that jab at you like a stiletto, Hammerhead makes you take notice. With songs varying from speed dirges like "Meandrethal" to scum pop like "New York? ... Alone?" Hammerhead demonstrates a wide range of hard musi- cal abilities. If the world were a little luckier, they'd be the next big thing. But they're probably too good for radio, so just go out and buy the album. You'll love it for the overwrought opening line to "Victoria" and its Missile Command-type sample if noth- ing else. - Ted Watts Better Than Ezra to make good in Pontiac Are you feeling "Good"? If you are, you might want to go to Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac at 6 p.m. Saturday to see Better Than Ezra. These Southern boys promise a fun show, with songs like "Rosealla," "Southern Girl" and the over- played "Good," from their debut album "Deluxe," and "King of New Orleans," off their new release "Friction, Baby." Even if you're not their biggest fan, lead singer Kevin Griffin Is so hot It's worth shelling out the $15 for the con- cert. The Daily is also giving away cool Better Than Ezra stuff like two tick- ets to the show with backstage passes, an autographed poster, a B.T.E. T- shIrt and a copy of the their new album. Various Artists Set It Off Soundtrack EastWest "Set It Off" is a nice soundtrack with a number of good songs from a variety of black-music genres. But I can't help but think it could and should have been much more solid. Take, for instance, Organized Noize and Queen Latifah remaking the hype "Set It Off" tune into some sort of R&B drivel. Granted, Latifah is an all-right vocalist and the song isn't half bad. And what about the first single off of the album, "MissingYou?" Don't get me wrong - the song is good. But we're talking Brandy, Tamia, Chaka Khan and Gladys Knight together. We're talking a quartet composed of some of the best samples of female R&B voices out today, but this song doesn't show this. The biggest sore thumb on this song is surely Knight's solo; her rough, deep- alto voice does not go well with those of her fellow "sisters." And the problems don't just stop with the R&B artists. Rap lovers will have their disappointments on this album, too. Like Bone Thugs-N- Harmony, who perform "Days of Our Livez." I applaud this song's underly- ing message with lines like "Now come into my world and you can see that we are more than thugs:' And I enjoy the group's heavily harmonic lyrical style. But can't they put a little more variety in how they rap? Once you've heard "Thuggish Ruggish Bone," then you basically already I Who Measures Your Success - You or the U? Sometimes these guys seem to be between musical styles. They don't know if they want to be rappers or Gregorian chanters. Yet "Set It Off" has some cuts. First and foremost is Blulight's "Sex Is on My Mind. Doesn't take too much to figure what they're talking about, but the singing is fresh. Also, performance veterans Simply Red and Seal add a lit- tle diversity spice to the album with the songs "Angel" and "Hey Joe." Goodie Mob's "Angelic Wars" is hype, and Busta Rhymes' "Live to Regret" (featuring samples from Brownstone's "Grapevyne") breaks stuff down with his raunchy, ODB-ish voice. Honestly, "Set It Off" is tight, and the songs are, overall, very enjoyable. My problem with the album is not that it's bad. It's that with the names fea- tured, I expected something more. - Eugene Bowen h Michigan eater ...September 67 November 8th Blind Pig I ' UAC's Sound Stage and N present 0 his Large Band 4ovem ber 10th Hill Auditorium Over 275,000 MCAT students knew.
