riginal cc candidacy, By Katie Plona, Stephanie Powell and Ajit K. Thavarajah Daily Staff Reporters Including everyone from retired Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell to former President Carter, the list of University presidential candidates displays a diverse representation of people. Of the 302 prospective candidates I t eas selected by the Presidential o S e a r ch Cdvisorey declined many were not J aware they had University dea been nominat- ed for the job. Donald Kennedy, president emeritus of Stanford University, said he was sur- prised to learn that his name was on the list. "I think somebody might have *ught they were doing a favor for me, but wild horses couldn't drive me away from Stanford," Kennedy said. James Richards, dean of Pharmacy at the University, had a similar reaction, although he knew of his nomination. "I am surprised that my name was submitted. I had no aspiration of being president of the University," Richards THE FINAL FOUR The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 18, 1996 - 7 intenders reflect on presidential finalists said. "I am 62 years old. I graciously declined." None of the four finalists chosen by PSAC yesterday are currently employed by the University. Former U.S. President Gerald Ford, a Michigan alum, and Johnetta Cole, last year's commencement speaker, were also on the list. 2 years ciously 'ames Richards LSA first-year student Johnathan Thompson said PSAC's list con- tained a great number of quali- fied candidates for the presiden- cy. offered a warning to the future presi- dent. "Obviously the president has to show strong leadership for a truly distin- guished faculty, but I also think that they need to be able to deal skillfully with the Board of Regents and avoid the problems of the past," Kennedy said. Out of the 302 presidential candi- dates, 291 were nominated by others or actively recruited by PSAC. Only I1 nominated themselves. PSAC looked through recommendations, resumes, letters and speeches, and eventually held private interviews with potential candidates. Jeffrey Lehman, Law School dean and PSAC chair, said the selection process was harder than he anticipated. "The relevant pool is small to begin with. It consists exclusively of people who are happy and succeeding in their current positions," Lehman said. "The most time-consuming work in a search process is not the decision. The only real decision in the process comes in the end of a lengthy process of iden- tification and recruitment;" he said. Many of the candidates were not upset to learn they were not selected as a finalist. "I felt I was not the candidate they were looking for, so I was not sur- prised," Steneck said. Former U.S. President Gerald Ford attends a conference on campus last month. Ford's name was one of 302 submitted to PSAC. n of Pharmacy . "1 think that it is pretty cool that they considered a lot of high-profile individuals to be pos- sible candidates. I don't know how real- istic the University's chances were to get Colin Powell, but at least they tried," Thompson said. Many of the candidates said that the next president must possess strong qualities to represent the University. "I think the candidates came from major administrative positions and they were highly qualified," said Nicholas Steneck, professor and director of Inteflex, who was also on the list. Kennedy agreed with Steneck, but Walter Harrison, vice president of University relations, felt the same way. "I know the finalists are a spectacular group of people and I am not in their league," Harrison said. But many still said they felt honored just to be considered for the presidency. "I am flattered at the thought and I appreciate it," Harrison said. Daniel Atkins, School of Information dean, said he is content working on the new program in his school. "It is rarer to create a new school than it is to be the president," Atkins said. "I am honored, but I'm happy about what I am doing now."
