Goldberg previously hosted in 1994 and 1995, after David Letterman's appearance the year before. Who's likely to take her place? So far, talk show queen Rosie O'Donnell has expressed an interest. Who knows what will hap- pen ... it's the producer's job to pick a host, and no producer has been named. We'll just have to wait for the final word . V ire babies! Aghhh! Woody Harrelson and Laura Louie are the new and proud parents of baby girl Zoe. The two have another 3-year-old daughter as well. V Sony Corp. just announced that John Calley, current president of United Artists Pictures Inc., will replace Alan J. Levine as president of Sony Pictures Entertainment. What's this all about ... musical chairs in Hollywood? V What do Lili Taylor ("I Shot Andy Warhol" and "Girls Town" -- although most of us remember her as the crazy girl in "Say Anything" who sang "That'll never be me ... that'll never be me ... don't you even think it!") and Melissa Etheridge have in common? Apparently both are going to star in films about rock legend Janis Joplin. Taylor will appear in TriStar's autho- rized version, based on the 1992 book, "Love, Janis." Etheridge, on the other hand, will star in the unauthorized ver- sion by Lakeshore Entertainment and will actually sing the songs. Taylor, though, will lip sync to original recordings. Both films will begin shooting in 1997, according to this week's Entertainment Weekly. MUSIC v Former Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct last week in a New York City court- room. Chamberlain has entered a drug rehabilitation program, and may have his charges dropped if he successfully completes it by the end of the year. By lames n; P. But sometimes, we need not fear decadence. Just sit back and watch it; love it. Maison Edwards Tobacconist is located in Nickels Arcade, between State and Maynard streets, but it might as well be nes- tled into the comfortable, C rainy alleys of London. Upon entering the store,. The silly art deco and faux country squire furniture of the cof- feehouse circuit is chased d lic." More than any other sphere of smok- ing, cigars are vastly complex. Every cigar worth smoking in Maison Edwards is hand-rolled. Machine made cigars, made with cheap tobacco and wrapper leaves, overheat when smoked and generally taste like a burning sock. When you think of cigars, DO NOT think of Swisher Sweets or (it hardly needs to be said) Blunts. It should also be noted that this is not a cheap hobby. Expect to pay $4 at the very D least for a decent cigar. Most of the truly excep- tional ones go from $7 up. Within the world of handmade cigars there is staggering variety. There are smokes for every taste and palate. Just ask the regu- lars. Chris Carnacchio, an LSA junior, recommends Ashtons (as would I), a mild yet flavorful smoke from the Dominican Republic. Tom, too much of a gentle- man to give his last name or age, dis- agreed, calling the Ashtons "too mild." His call would be either Avos, a stronger Dominican or Fillipes, which are stronger still. "I'd say the Avos are our biggest sell- er," Chase said. Louie and Jon cast their votes for Padron Anniversario and Hemingway Short Stories, respectively, calling the Ull Taylor, left, plays the character Patti in the film "Girls Town." Her next project will be the role of rocker Janis Joplin In a few months. V Presidents of the USA, who brought you great songs such as "Lump," "Peaches" and "Kitty" will return on Election Day (Nov. 5), with their second album, aptly titled "Two." The Presidents have also recorded a Christmas tune called "Christmas Piglet," which appears on a new Rock For Choice Christmas compilation titled "Come All Ye Faithful." V David Bowie was just in Italy, tak- ing part in the Florence Biennale, a three month long cultural event. Bowie contributed an 18-foot art piece called "Where Do They Come From? Where Do They Go?" Bowie is currently recording his next album, "Earthlings," that will come out next year. J Now that Filter drummer Matt Walker is on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, the other members of the band are faced with the task of recording their next album without a live drummer. Guitarist Brian Liesegang has said that they're going to try a blend of live and electronic drums on their next release. This place carries every smoker's necessity under the sun; from domestic cigarettes (Marlboro and Camel) to the more acerbic Turkish smokes to the impressively classy Nat Sherman, Dunhill and Davidoff. They stock a dizzying array of pipes, pipe tobacco, lighters, humidors (a humidified cabi- net made specially to store cigars) and cigar cutters. But the pride of Maison Edwards is the cigars. Three massive, sliding- door humidors dominate the back cor- ner of the store, containing the finest handmade cigars this side of Havana. The cigar renaissance of the last sev- eral years has brought a well deserved prestige to the humble Tobacconist. Now neophytes and connoisseurs alike mix and fumigate together, over a cigar. Fred Chase, a Maison Edwards resi- dent expert, noticed an upturn in the cigar business "around 1993 or so." "Most of our cigar buyers tend to be execs or young professionals," he said.
