The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 11, 1996 -13 When you pick this poorly, you get a lot of ribbing apologize. A few years ago, the football writers here at the Daily thought it would be fun to pick games every Friday in the paper. Last season, we decided to institute the spread into our picks. This year we have slipped into mediocrity. The Greek has spoken all the wrong words, Sollenberger is far from Paradise, and I've, well, been way, way off Target. How bad are things? At 5-5,Ihad the best record - last week. The picks have RYAN gotten so ugly that last weekend White on I was assaulted Target by a University administrator. Now, I'm not going to name names, but while trying to jam into the all-too- small press box elevator at Northwestern, a certain interim-presi- dent elbowed me in the ribs. But I'm not mad. After picking Michigan State not to cover against Eastern Michigan two weeks ago, I deserved it. After all, I was never below .500 last season, and former President James Duderstadt never elbowed me. See the connection? But the fact of the matter is, this season has been nuts. Illinois went more than four games without seeing the endzone. Then, in Week Four, the Fighting Illini were 26 1/2 point favorites over Akron. Well, I for one didn't figure that Illinois' kick- er could knock nine field goals through in one game. I took the Zips (a team now getting national exposure through its Keds endorsement). Who would have fig- ured Illini back Rodney Holcombe would have picked that day to rush for four touchdowns. I mean, you try to figure out Purdue. The next week, Purdue does some- thing like blow out North Carolina State. Go figure. Even Sollenberger, from Phoenix, Ariz., who dreams about little Sun Devils in his sleep, didn't pick Arizona State's 19-0 stomping of Nebraska. Cotsonika claims to know the least Staff Picks - all picks made against the spread, C Game (HOME TEAM IN CAPS) PENN STATE (-21) VS. Purdue about most of the games we pick, but he is somehow in the lead and miracu- lously over .500. None of this is an excuse, however. We know we need to pick it up. We know we are the Illinois, Purdue and Indiana's of soothsayers. At least we play fair, which saves any of us from being Michigan State's doppleganger. However, if we get any worse, the NCAA may close us down just the same. So we'll promise to do better if you'll promise not to laugh as hard as you probably have been. And if I don't do better this week, I'm taking the press box stairs at Michigan Stadium next weekend. - Ryan White can be reached over e-mail at target a~umich.edu. The bad news is that the con- ference schedule isn't getting any easier. The Wolverines broke into the 'W' column last week (1-3 Big Ten, 6-9 over- all) by beating Northwestern. Now the Wolverines will try to string a couple of game against defending Big Ten cham- pions Michigan State, but came up short. A win or two this weekend might give Michigan some confidence. The Wolverines hope not only to get a couple of victories during this two- game homestand, but are also hoping for a big turnout. Tonight's match is dubbed the annual "Rock the House" night. It's an annual event intended to promote fan participation and atten- dance. "I hope people are fired up for this great event, 'Rock the House,"' I i wins together. At Cliff Keen Ar hey take moo. "I don't feel this eam is going south, I feel like I've heduled this team into a real tough position." The Wolverines have already lost seven of their nine games at the hands of top 20 opponents. Playing in the Big Ten, a team is guaranteed a tough schedule. In the Big Ten, four teams are ranked in the top 20, and in the ninth spot sits the Badgers, with a hefty 13-1 Ooverall record, 3-1 in the conference. Wisconsin's Laura Abbinante is arguably the top setter in the league. -She's seventh in the Big Ten's all-time assists category, as well as the all-time assist leader at Wisconsin. Playing behind her are outside hitters Amy Lee (3.82 kills per game) and Heather -Dodaro (.316 hitting percentage). Last year, the injury-plagued ,Badgers won the NIVC tournament - The invitational tournament for those eams not qualifying for the NCAA ourney - despite finishing below Michigan in the conference. "A lot of teams are taking Wisconsin seriously," Giovanazzi said. "We cer- tainly (are)." The Wolverines will get little rest after facing the Badgers. Tomorrow, Minnesota comes to Ann Arbor. The Gophers don't have as good a record as the Badgers do, but at 12-5 ind 3-1 in the Big Ten, Minnesota will still prove to be a tough opponent for the Wolverines.
