YOST Continued from Page 1B On the ice, fans will not see the array of logos which covered the ice last year. The scheme containing the CCHA logo, block 'M's, and the Yost Ice Arena imprint has been eliminated in favor of a more conservative approach. The new ice will feature a national championship trademark at center-ice, listing the seasons of Michigan's eight titles and commemorating the school's 75 years of hockey. "(The multiple logos) got to be a little much, so this year, we're trying to be a little classy," Yost manager Doug Daugherty said. "We decided it's time to do something special." That special philosophy begins with Michigan's fans. In an effort to eliminate obstructed view seating, the Michigan athletic department ripped out nearly 900 seats from the corners, reducing the arena's capacity but creating a better view for season-ticket holders. All of the seats in the north end of the arena were replaced. The rest of the seats will be replaced in the upcoming years. Not all of the renovations in Yost will be visible to the general public, how6v- er. The plumbing and bathrooms were replaced, as well as the electrical facili- ties. The changes were neccessary to modernize the 72-year-old arena for the players and fans. Yost was converted, from a field house to a hockey arena in 1973, and at that time, the team's facilities were suit- able. With Michigan's current national recruiting base, however, Yost needed improvements to remain competitive while drawing athletes. When a recruit steps into the renovat- ed Yost, he will see a new weight room, athletic trainer's room and lockerrooms. "The players that were here (last sea- son) will appreciate the changes (in the building)," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "(The upgraded facili- ties) say Michigan is not just a good team, but a solid program." Berenson said the renovations have been talked about for the past 10 years. His office, as well as those of his assistants, will move from its present location in Weidenbach Hall to Yost. Some of the funds for the arena reno- vation were slowly gathered through a $2 ticket surcharge last season, but most came through private donations. "Most of the money was raised through private fund raising - (a pro- ject) which will keep going throughout the year," Daugherty said. While Michigan will begin skating at Yost today, the Wolverines will play their first two home games at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, which is located just south of the I-94 expressway. The team's annual intra-squad scrimmage, the Blue-White game, will be played Oct. 5. Michigan will spend the early portion of its schedule on the road to ensure that Yost is ready for game action. The first home game for Michigan is against Ohio State on Nov. 8.
