The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 13, 1996 - 9 Powney pleads no contest to drug and weapons charges MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Robert Downey Jr. pleaded no contest Wednesday to drug and weapons charges and was ordered to remain in a live-in drug treatment program until sentencing. Downey, 31, could get up to three years in prison at his Nov. 6 sentencing for felony cocaine possession and misde- meanors of driving under the influence, possession of a weapon and being under the influence of a drug. Under the plea, a felony heroin possession charge was dropped. Following the plea hearing, the Oscar-nominated actor kissed his estranged wife, Deborah Falconer, and appeared relieved. Asked by reporters how his drug treatment was going, he replied, "Real good. It's working." Prosecutors said they will probably seek some jail time for Downey, who was arrested in June by deputies who said they found crack cocaine, heroin and a .357 Magnum revolver in his truck during a Malibu traffic stop. Hours before he was to be arraigned on those charges, sheriff's deputies arrested him again on charges of breaking into a neighbor's home, where he was found sleeping in a child's bed. Those charges are pending. Downey received an Oscar nomination for the 1992 film "Chaplin.' Some of his other films include "Less Than Zero," "Restoration" and "Natural Born Killers." I Robert Downey Jr. is trying to make a clean break. Be careful ... the contest continues RECORDS continued from Page 8 orno For Pyros Good God's Urge Narner Bros. Let's just get one thing straight: Perry Farrell is a rock star. Sure, some of his -ical endeavors (Jane's Addiction) a little higher than others (Psi Com), but the man could bang on a cof- fee can with a fork for 30 minutes, and fans would probably still run out and buy the album. Fortunately, Porno for Pyros' sophomore effort "Good God's Urge" turned out to be an atmospheric head trip - worthy of praise even in the face of front-man Farrell's incredible backlog of music. 'rummer Stephen Perkins' turbo percussion makes the album's first sin- gle "Tahitian Moon," sound like a throwback to PFP's more urgent debut "Porno for Pyros." But the majority of "Good God's Urge" is cathartic and heady - floating along on samples and electronic touches that rule out any "urge" to mosh. "Kimberly Austin" and "100 Ways" (" thought about you and me a hundred s / If I had my way when I woke up .'I would kiss you before you opened your eyes") highlight Farrell's ability to pen love songs that never quite fall into tlie cheese-ballad realm. And as an added bonus to Perkins and guitarist Peter DiStefano, the album also fea- tures guest artists like Mike Watt and Dave Navarro. (Hey, someone call Eric every and we'll have a Jane's Addiction beunion!) verall, the album is relaxed, simple. yen songs that deal with confusion and suffering ("Thick of it All") are lay- ered with flute noises and "space gui- tars" and come off sounding spiritual. Could Farrell be coming to peace with the angst that fueled some of his earlier work? Good God! - Kari Jones Boredoms *per Roots 6 Reprise That's odd. The Boredoms are sup- posed to be a Japanoise band, playing noisy rock music with lots of screaming vocals. This album is fairly quiet and might almost be described as ambient. Yeah, the Boredoms are back chal- lenging their listeners again. But where most of their releases have been chal- lenging to the person who is making first contact with them, this album will likely challenge old fans more than new (although the odd song titling, naming all the songs numbers from "0" to "15," probably won't be helping the newbies any). "6" is a rambling piece of music with slowly added and removed sounds, con- structed in a way to sound like some sort of score for a student film where the music has had a lot more effort put into it than the lighting. This could more or less describe the whole album, but it is especially true of this song. "2," on the other hand, has the speed and almost has the muscle to compare to Chrome. Widely rendered riffs and a highly synthesized but evenly distorted sound make it a track that is almost but not quite ready to enter the world of alternative radio. What it sounds like is that the Boredoms are trying to tap into the sound that will appeal to a lot of earth- tone-stripe-wearing, baggy-jeaned, buzz-cut-but-mutton-chopped rail-thin youth who like the rhythm thing but are sick of all the crappy funk that's around. There's still some difficult-to-classify noise on the album, but it really is a major sound change. The general lack of vocals is disappointing, but the music is good enough to more or less make you forget it. "Super Roots 6" isn't as adventurous from a mainstream point of view as the rest of the band's output, but from a view within the Boredoms' discography it's practically "Sgt. Pepper's." - Ted Watts Because we're so nice, we're giving you one more day to stop by the Daily to win FREE STUFF. Don't forget ...
