i CI .TICS ontinded from Page 1 foolish about spending money ... they don't think of women as deal-makers," Richards said. Democratic voters are more inclined to trust female Republican candidates than male GOP candidates, according to a survey conducted two years ago by the Republican Network to Elect Women,. Republican voters in the study, however, not indicate a significant preference of female over male GOP candidates. Whether Republican or Democrat, female candidates tend to win votes for trust and understanding. "In general,(voters) view female candi- dates as much more compassionate," said Tom Shields of the Lansing-based Marketing Resource Group, which often does campaign ads for Republican candidates. Female candi- dates "certainly are given the benefit of the doubt on the trust issue. People's view of the 'slick politicians' tends to be male and not female." Views have changed enough to let women be part of the gang, but not the leader of the pack, Stabenow said. "We've now accepted women as part of the legislative process, but we have yet-to accept women as top excecutive roles," Stabenow NATION/WORLD said- Stbenow said her political career - from local elected positions to a run in 1994 as both a gub-rnatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial can- didatp - has mirrored women's entrance into therolitical arena. Today voters are looking for wanren to be team players and raise sensitive issuts in Congress, she said. 'It's very much a plus to be running as a wok an for Congress," Stabenow said. F epublicans are putting their female lawmak- ers and candidates in the spotlight this fall, courting a historically Democratic female voting bl.oick. As more women embark on careers and make independent strides in the political world, The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 10, 1996-- 7 Republicans are expecting an influx of votes and candidates for the GOP. Young mothers and independent women such as Rep. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.) and Michigan Senate chal- lenger Ronna Romney became the face of the Republican Party at the convention in San Diego last month. "Women look at things differently than men, and to have the female perspective represented is always a good thing. That's not to say we should go and encourage women to run just because they're female," said State Republican chair Betsy DeVos, who also runs her own business Richards, who beat the odds years ago with her popularity as governor of Texas, said women voters - not just women candi- dates - deserve credit for making the female legislator more than just a token. Groups such as Emily's List, an organization that raises money for female candidates, have helped to change the tone from a time 15 to 20 years ago when "women were not the first to support other women," she said. "Women really are there for other women. They're far more supportive - we've gotten rid of all that 'Queen Bee' stuff," Richards said. - The Associated Press contributed to this report. and serves on Committee. the Republican National KNEED DEPENDABLE person to help 2:30- SEEKING STUDENT to train and develop WORK IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS! %:00 M-F. I've been seeing the same guy for a year," said a female LSA sophomore who also did not wish to be identified. With the high level of sexual activ- ity on campus, birth control is an important issue for many students. Information, however, can some- times be difficult to obtain. University Health Services offers both information and birth control products to the student community. "We have every available means of birth control in the U.S.," said Dr. Ronald Mulder, director of gynecol- ogy at UHS. "The one that is pre- scribed the most is the birth control pill." Birth control pills contain synthetic hormones that suppress ovulation in women. While the birth control pill is fre- quently prescribed, "the most common form of contraception on campus is the condom," Mulder said. "We would hope that the condom and the birth con- trol pill are used in conjunction, as together they provide the best birth con- trol possible." The public health message about condoms seems to have impacted the population. "I always wear a condom. It's a habit," the male student said. Another form of birth control that is not as common is Depo Provera, an injection of a different synthetic hor- mone that also prevents conception. One injection protects against pregnan- cy for three months. "It's very effective birth control," said. the female student, who takes Depo Provera. "You can't miss it (like you could the birth control pill). I knew a friend on it, and she liked it." Along with the risk of pregnancy comes the threat of sexually transmitted diseases. "I feel pretty knowledgeable (about STDs). People know that they are out there," the female student said. Just because students are aware that STDs exist does not mean they are not at risk of getting them. "People know (about STDs) but think that it won't ever happen to them" the female student said. "I would say the average Joe knows what he needs to do (to stay protected) but doesn't want to' One of the more common STDs on campus is the human papilloma virus. "It's the (STD) that affects the most students, and the one students know the least about," Mulder said. "About 25 percent of the student population are carriers of the virus." HPV is typically contracted through vaginal or anal sex, and is not transmit- ted by bodily fluids; but rather by direct skin-to-skin contact. There are some 70 forms of the virus, and some can cause serious health problems. "(HPV) is the cause of cervical cancer and can cause genital warts," Mulder said. "For the majority of people there are no symptoms." Because of this, HPV can be hard to spot without a Pap smear test for women, or one of the new DNA tests for both men and women. Students interested in more infor- mation about either birth control or STDs can call UHS at 764-8320. The Washington Post WASHINGTON - Chicago's Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, who last month revealed he is dying of cancer and is expected to live less than a year, received the nation's highest civilian honor from President Clinton yesterday, while expressing major differences of opinion with the president. The Chicago prelate, 68, then went to Georgetown University, the presi- dent's alma mater, to criticize the welfare bill passed by Congress and signed by Clinton as too harsh and condemned the president's decision to veto a ban on some late-term abor- tions. As he presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Bernardin and 10 others, an emotional Clinton said, "Throughout his career, he has fought mean-spiritedness," Bernardin earlier this summer had called for an open dia- logue among Catholics of all view- points. Yesterday, the self-effacing Bernardin said he was flattered by the recognition at the White House, but concerned about the president's veto of the late-term abortion ban, and said he would like to discuss it with Clinton. "I'm willing to do it. I'm very com- mitted to the position," he told reporters on the White House lawn after the cere- mony. The frail-looking Bernardin, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer, is scheduled to participate in a prayer service Thursday calling on Congress to override Clinton's veto of the late- term abortion ban.
