Unless, of course, that quitter is Perry Farrell _- the man who has made bowing out of successful projects into an art form of sorts. Back in the good old days ( 1991) when millions of American kids were scratching their heads and saying "Mom, what does 'Lollapalooza' mean?" Farrell was feeding music aficionados a slice of alternative pie. Jane's Addiction. his band of the unlike the Eddie Vedders of this world, Farrell has never been hard- pressed to combine success with integrity. moment was headlining a day-long festival that brought together acts from every branch of the musical spectrum. lce-T, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Living Color. Nine Inch Nails ... who would have thought that it would work? But it did work. It worked so well that Jane's Addiction began to draw (cringe)"mainstream" attention to their 1990 release "Ritual de lo Habitual." Their songs were being played on national radio. Mothers across America were answering, "Honey, I think 'Lollapalooza' means something about taking people's money." And - coinci- dence or not - this was the point at which Farrell and the boys decided to call it quits. If it was a fear of things "common" Perry Farrell, center, and cohorts make up Porno for Pyros. that led Farrell to the decision to move on to a new musical project, it seems ironic that he continued to hold on to the reins of Lollapalooza long after it was nothing more than a bloated and dying cash cow. It's hard to be alterna- tive when you're presiding over a festi- val where fans are paying three dollars for a cup of water. But this year Farrell did it again. The Lollapalooza festival had blown FOR YOUR EYE EXAMS & EYEGLASSES Giorgio Armani STUDENT DISCOUNTS fIjcharrdson 's 320 S. Then he got out of the captain's chair and hit the road. Porno for Pyros, his current band (along with former Jane's drummer Stephen Perkins and guitarist Peter DiStefano), played a sold-out show at Detroit's St. Andrew's Hall on July 15. They could have easily filled a larger venue, but put on an incredible show in such an intimate setting. The show started off normally (if anything Farrell does is "normal") with "Porpoise Head," a tune off the group's new album "Good God's Urge." But before the concert ended, Farrell had stripped to a pair of black bikini briefs. encored with several Jane's Addiction tunes (including "Mountain Song," "My Time" and "I Would For You) and even hung out the window of St. Andrew's with DiStefano and played a short acoustic set into the street. Amazing. And Farrell's list of "What I did on my summer vacation" didn't end there. Always one to explore new musical dimensions, he came up with the ENIT festival - an alternative man's alterna- tive to what wasn't alternative anymore. What? Exactly. ENIT is a music festival that occurs from sundown to sunrise and includes such non-conventional activities as attempting to search for other-worldly life forms. Oh, and it's also about love. Farrell has said that, while he is not condoning orgies, he wouldn't be opposed to having them happen at his festival. Imagine Lollapalooza's older sister, the hip- pie. Original? Yes. Fun? Definitely. Successful? Maybe. But unlike the Eddie Vedders of this world, - Farrell has never been hard-pressed to combine success with integrity. When success out- weighs originality, the man moves on. And you can bet that the moment you see someone's chest covered with "I went to ENIT and all I got was this stupid T-shirt" ... Farrell will be exit- ing stage left. Kelly Xintaris Daily Arts Writer Say goodbye to summer TV No more eye-glazing reruns, sensationalistic Olympic commentary and "Singled Out"-induced sluggishness.
