Gnatt hearts and Daily Ar stomped them flat Da__yArtsEd__ on the floor. This was their precious Lollapalooza. How could some testosterone-overloaded metal band headline their festival? In its sixth year as a showcase and breeding ground for alternative bands to get national exposure, Lollapalooza took an unexpected turn to the musical right. Instead of attempting to focus on off-the-wall indie bands like it had in the past, festival organizers (with- out the help of festival originator. Perry Farrell, who left the organiza- tion after the '95 show) decided to have their own Monsters of Rock con- cert. With the bill comprised of Metallica, Soundgarden, the Ramones and Rancid, among others, the Gen- Xers were stripped of their precious alternative field day. I don't think anyone rioted. You know we are a generation of slackers, right? But we hit 'em where it hurt - their bank accounts. Ticket sales were down, and there wasn't even a Lollapalooza held on this side of Michigan. Despite the fact the festival was being headlined by old metalheads, Metallica was surprisingly the best headlining act at Lollapalooza in the past few years. Hands down, Metallica is a great live band. They play tight, strong and loud. But aside from Lars Ulrich's superb drumming and James Hetfield's rich growl lies something that few bands ever master - a powerful stage per- sona. Loaded with charisma, charm and arrogance, Metallica knows how to entertain its audiences. After 15 years of playing their 10-minute thrash-metal epics, it's an impressive feat to keep crowds awake and on their toes. Last year's headliners, Sonic Youth, may have been an indie rocker's wet dream of Lollapalooza, but in no way did the noise artists have the ability to headline an outdoor festival of that proportion. The previous year, Smashing Pumpkins had the same problem. Despite all his rage, Billy Corgan was still just a wuss on the stage. Crowd interaction was mini- mal or non existent, and the band members had their feet glued to the floor. But Metallica knows how to party. The best test of a band's ability to play a good live show is whe who knows little or nor former's music can listen concert. Metallica is one that can entertain pretty r First of all, pyrotechi They don't make a show, do add a bit of flair to it important thing is that ar they are having fun per wants to see some poo pissed off because he has of a rock 'n' roll star?
