Anne Poglits, a 6-foot- 5 sophomore newcomer, who is also a member of the women's basketball team, has looked good in practice so far. "She's just a natural," Giovanazzi said. "She walked right into the gym, and she was right at home. She's find- ing herself on the first team quite a bit." On the defensive side, the middle blocker position should be strong with junior Sarah Jackson and sophomore Linsey Ebert returning. Ebert will be a force in the conference, Giovanazzi said. One way the Wolverines can make their way into the NCAA tournament is by winning the Big Ten and gaining an automatic berth. "I think it would take just a little more consistency than we had last year (to be competitive in the conference)," Giovanazzi said. Several other squads will contend for the Big Ten title. Michigan State, Penn State, Illinois and Indiana all made the NCAA tournament last year. 1995 final standings Team Con 1. Michigan St. 2. Ohio St. 3. Penn St. 4. Illinois Indiana 6. Michigan 7. Twelve members of the this year's team are freshmen. And five runners are redshirt sophomores. The senior class is anything but a class. Just call it a senior trio. Jennifer Barber, Molly Lori and Tanya Manson return this year as the only true seniors on the squad. The trio is all that remains from Michigan's first conference champi- onship team in 1992. Lori didn't even run last year and Barber competed in just three meets last year, including districts and NCAAs. But McGuire isn't worried about the lack of experience. He likes what he has seen in practice and believes that experience can be overrated. "I'd rather have someone that is inexperienced and really competitive For this week- end's opening meet against the Spartans, none of the seniors will run. In fact, Barber will be attending a wedding of a Michigan cross country alum.
