14A - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, December 5, 1996 TURCO Continued from Page 10A Turco was the difference - no doubt about it. The Wolverines did not have many scoring opportunites in the first period. They couldn't get it going. If it weren't for Turco, Michigan could have been down early. And the result could have been the same as last year's home opener against the Broncos. "Turco played terrific," Western Michigan coach Bill Wilkinson said. 'We had some chances there to score, in the first period especially, and he made some fabulous saves. This was a different Iurco from the goalie fans have seen earlier in the sea- son. He didn't give thei crowd heart attacks as he has done in the past going after loose pucks outside the goal crease. He didn't let in a goal seconds into the game like he did against Minnesota last Friday. He wasn't perfect, however. He did let in a goal to Cardwell on a rebound that dribbled under his pads, cutting the Michigan lead to 2-1 at 5:52 into the third period. But he didn't cave in. Turco followed the lone Western Michigan goal with a save one miunte afterwards, and sec- onds later, smothered the puck on Mike Melas' shot, who received a pass in stride in front of the net. "This game was a good test for me," Turco said. "I thought tonight I played my best game because I was in control and confident." It must have been a much better feel- ing for Turco leaving the ice last night than it was last October. And thanks to Turco, the streak at Yost continues. BRONCOS Continued from Page 10A them every time. "Turco kept us in the game in the first period," Berenson said. "(The Broncos') best chances were on the power play and Turco was the difference in that peri- od." Turco's 15 saves in the first were more than he some- times has to make in a game. He finished with 30 saves. Michigan had only seven shots in the first frame, but evened the shot disparity in the second period, outshoot- ing the Broncos 17-6. Despite this pressure in Western Michigan's zone, Michigan could not score for the first 19 minutes of the second period. The Wolverines finally got a break when Harold Schock's power-play shot deflected off Barnes directly to Luhning, who was standing at the left post by himself to poke in the gift goal at 19:02 for a 2-0 lead. Earlier in the second, the Broncos' power play had 1:35 of 5-on-3 advantage to try to get on the board, but Turco and the penalty-killing unit ignited the crowd by killing it off "When you get 5-on-3, especially when you're down 2-0, you've got to get one of those in the net," Western Michigan left wing Justin Caldwell said. "I've got to give a lot of credit to Turco. He played a really strong game." Michigan killed nine of the Broncos' 10 power plays while scoring on 2-of-7 chances with a man up. The Wolverines may be a little short in the personnel department when they travel to on Ferris State Saturday. Michigan defenseman Peter Bourke separated his lef shoulder and right wing Sean Ritchlin injured a knee. X rays will determine Ritchlin's status for Saturday's game. The third period got a little chippy as referee Jeff Shell whistled I1 Michigan penalties and 10 against the Broncos. There were a total of 42 penalties on the night. "Don't start talking about referees," Western Michigan coach Bill Wilkinson said. "Christ, I don't have enough money to get fined. "You can criticize the president of the United States, but God forbid if you criticize the referee." I i ARMY ROTC SALUTES OUR SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS.
