"Blain and Pusztai should step into leadership roles,"Goldberg said. The freshman class will be expected to make an immediate contribution in the fall. Matt Wright, from Wichita, Kan., finished high school with a 110-0 sin- gles record and captured four Kansas high school championships. He has been ranked in the top 30 in the nation every year of his junior career and won over 140 singles titles. "Matt has great talent,' Michigan coach Brian Eisner said. "He has great touch, great hands and good timing. We're working on his strength and conditioning:" The Wolverines also recruited the Canadian National Under-18 Singles Champion, Brad McFarlane, from Ontario. McFarlane was the top- ranked singles player under 18 in Canada in 1995 and played on the Canadian World Youth Cup Team in 1994. "The nice thing that Brad brings is international experience," Eisner said. "He's competed in a lot of ITA (International Tennis Association) tournaments and brings a lot of dou- bles success." Ann Arbor native John Long earned All-South Central Conference honors four consecutivetseasons in high school. He won the Michigan state championship as a junior and senior and went 30-0 during his last two years. Ron Nano from Great Neck, N.Y., has been a top-40 player every year in junior tennis. He has been in the top three in the East his entire career in the 18-and-under division. Nano also pro- vides strong doubles play, Goldberg said. "Ron is very quick and agile," Eisner said. "He is a very crafty and talented individual." The impact of six new players will be felt immediately, and Eisner will give everyone a chance to prove them- selves. Both Eisner and Goldberg will use the fall season to determine a line- up for spring competition. "We've got to give everybody a chance to play so we know where we are and where we arekgoing;' Eisner said. "The group has a lot of energy and everyone wants to work hard and do well. "We certainly have a young talent base to do well and go far." The influx of new players gives Eisner depth at both singles and dou- bles positions. Goldberg is confident that the new players will make a last- ing contribution. "This is the strongest freshman class we have had in years," Goldberg said. "These guys have been proven winners in juniors. "It basically boils down to how quickly they progress. Players' boasts reached Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz last week, and he cautioned that anything was possible. But on Monday, Vandy coach Rod Dowhower and his players were more respectful. "We all know what this is about. We all know who we are playing," Dowhower said. Comparisons to Northwestern are easy on the surface. Both schools are known more for academics than athletics, places where losing records far outweigh bowl appearances. Northwestern pulled an upset in the 1995 season opener against the Irish, and now Vandy hosts Notre Dame Thursday night. Punter 13ill Marinangel, who kicked a 70-yarder during Vandy's 41-0 loss to the Irish last season, said the Commodores are just trying to prepare as best they can. "We're not Northwestern," he said. Vanderbilt's problems stem from an inexperienced offense that will use five freshmen at wide receiver and four sopho- mores on the line. The Commodores stumbled to a 2-9 record in 1995, and not much better is expected this year. Looking for positives, Dowhower mentioned Vandy's jump in season ticket sales and the national exposure the Commodores will gain Thursday night on ESPN. "That's what it's all about, and that's the positive part of this whole opener," he said. "Our coaches and players and the uni- versity and football program have a chance to play before a national television audience." A crowd of more than 41,000 is expected, with Vanderbilt selling 28,000 season tickets, up from 11,000 in 1995. ThP school has even erected some temporary bleachers in theIT ners of Dudley Field to seat an extra 400 people. Dowhower thinks the Commodores are as prepared as pos- sible, but he is waiting to see how his younger players react during the game. "It's going to be interesting to see what happens with those young guys," he said. "They're very good athletes and good competitors. They've done a good job in practice, but they haven't teamed up against a crowd like Notre Dame." Dowhower enters his second season with at least one situ- ation settled. Junior Damian Allen is his starting quarterbcj following a battle with Ronnie Gordon, who transferrec&W Division I-AA Middle Tennessee State last winter. "He's mechanically much better than he was," Dowhower said. "He has a much better command of our system, and it's up to the supporting cast to provide him with the backup he needs. "He's not under the category of a player who can carry a team, but I think he's a good college quarterback." Spurier displeased with Wuerifel. The Associated Press Spurer said. Uneprode. pmrws n c~iui Iauwz GAINESVILLE, Fla. - After a weekend of stewing about the mediocre performance by his Fun 'N' Gun offense, Florida coach Steve Spurrier found a consolation prize Tuesday. "It's nothing to do with the receivers," Spurrier said. "They ran good routes. They were where they were supposed to be. Why he threw like he did, we don't have the answer right now."
