The Michigan Daily - Friday, November 22, 1996 - 13 BEARS Sontinued from Page1± adden and Warren Luhning. Matt Herr has switched to Morrison's line, with right wing Bill Muckalt staying put. Mike Legg has jumped to a line with freshman forward Andrew Merrick and Sean Ritehlin. But Berenson doesn't-consider the shakeup of Morrrison's line as a nega- tive and doesn't think of the lines as the No 1 and No. 2 lines. He feels that * change of lines may be exactly what Morrison and Botterill need. "It was good for Botterill, Morrison and Herr to move," Berenson said. "I think it will be good for both those lines. I wouldn't say that one line is our, first line and one is our second line. Both those lines are first lines as far as I'm concerned." Botterill welcomes the sight of Madden and Luhning next to him. .esides, he now will be playing next 11 Madden - this week's CCHA Defensive Player of the Week, the league's scoring leader (23 points) and Michigan's hottest player. "I'm real excited about playing with (Luhning and Madden)," Botterill said. "They are two of the grittiest players on our team. They're not afraid to use their wheels out there, and they are not afraid to do a little crash and bang."' Merrick's phyiscal play is the pri- mary reason for him moving up to play with Legg and Ritchlin. Berenson said that his effort and hard play were the reasons for his move. It shows that goals don't mean everything. Merrick hasn't yet to score his first goal as a Wolverine. "I've been working hard trying to get up there," Merrick said. "I feel more comfortable out there. Maybe it's confidence. I'm not scoring, but I'm just working harder." It has been a busy week for Brown. This weekend's back-to-back games will be the Bears' fourth and fifth games in seven days. After tying Princeton, 3-3, last Friday, Brown defeated Yale, 5-4, the next night. The Bears fell to Harvard, 2-1, on Tuesday. While 13 different players have scored for Brown, the Bears' offense has been bad. Defenseman Jimmy Anderson leads the team with seven points, while forward Michael Flynn follows with six. The Bears' leading goal-scorer is forward Adrian Smith ccBoth those lines are first lines as far as I'm concerned" -- Red Berenson Michigan hockey coach on his newly-shuffled lines who has three. To put things in perspective, four Wolverines -- Madden, Morrison. Luhning and Herr- at least double Brown's top scorer. Herr knows the most about Brown. While at Hotchkiss Prep School, he played with or competed against a few of the Bears. He also is familiar with the ECAC, since a lot of his prep school teammates and friends went on to play in the ECAC.I-lerr knows that Brown will bring a differ- ent style of play to Yost Arena tonight. "I think there is more size (in the CCHA)," Herr said. "The guys (in the ECAC) are little smaller, but still are pretty fast." 4 4 Michigan left wing Jason Botterill will skate with Warren Luhning, instead of against him, tonight. . ATCHUPS otinued from Page 11 MICHIGAN PASSING OFFENSE VS. Owo STATE PASSING DEFENSE: Michigan quarterback Scott Dreisbach has had his troubles as of late. Of course, that's like saying Boris Yeltsin only has minor health problems. Dreisbach threw three interceptions and fumbled once against the Nittany Lions. Against Purdue, he was picked off twice and fumbled twice. * Still, Michigan co-captain Jarrett Irons said this week the one thing he knows about Dreisbach is that he'll bounce, back. He'll need to bounce like a Superball for Michigan to win tomorrow. Ohio State is giving up only 145.3 yards per game through the air. Shawn Springs, possibly the top defensive back in the league, leads the Ohio State see- ondary. Springs has only 30 tackles and no interceptions this season, but that's because most teams throw away from him. Saftey Damon Moore has five inter- ceptions, and cornerback Ty Howard has four. Add to that an experience defensive line and linebacking corps that has come up with 35 sacks, and again, Michigan is in trouble. ADVANTAGE: OHIO STATE RUSHING OFFENSE VS. MICHIGAN RUSHING DEFENSE: If the Wolverines are going to win this game, or even keep it close, it will be up to the defense. Junior tailback Pepe Pearson enters the game with 1,256 yards rushing on the season. And while his 125.6 yards- per-game average is impressive, he is no tougher a back to stop than Eddie George was last season. George had 104 yards in last year's game but wasn't the dominating factor he had been all year. Michigan has two things going for it in this catagory - William Carr and Jarrett Irons. Both are seniors, and both are playing their final regular-season game for Michigan. The Wolverines are giving up only 104.6 yards rushing per game this year and should be able to stuff Ohio State in spite of guard Orlando Pace, who looks like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man- only bigger ADVANTAGE: OHio STATE PASSING OFFENSE VS. MICHIGAN PASSING DEFENSE: The question here is who will be Ohio State's starting quarterback? Joe Germaine. Stanley Jackson or Jermaine Jackson? Chances are it won't be the third, but after that, it's anyone's guess, including lito's. Jackson brings to the Ohio State offense the ablitity to scramble out of the pocket and run. The same ability that gave Michigan trouble against Purdue's Rick 'refzger. Jermaine is the better dancer ... oops, Germaine is the better passer He has completed on nearly 60 percent of his passes and connected for 13 touch- downs. He has only been picked offthree times. Michigan will need another big game from Charles Woodson and the rest of the secondary. The Wolverines also need to continue pressuring quarterbacks like they pressured Wally Richardson last week against Penn State. AnvANmTAGE: EVEN SPECIAL TEAMS: If the two defenses do what they are capable of doing, tomorrow's game could come down to special teams, which could, again, be a major problem for Michigan. You could say Michigan's special teams had problems against the Nittany Lions, but only in the sense that the offense has just been slightly off. The Wolverines had one kick blocked and returned for a touchdown last week and had another partially blocked. The kick returns weren't all that great either. Brent Bartholomew is averaging 42 yards a punt for Ohio State, while Paul Peristeris is averaging five yards less per kick. Remy Hamilton has hit 14 of his 19 attempts for Michigan. Ohio State's Josh Jackson has made seven of his I1 trys. One would expect Michigan to have the advantage here due to the fact that it gets to practice special teams more dur- ing the games. But after last week's performance against Penn State ... ADVANTAGE: If Ohio State gets out to an early lead, and the crowd gets even more riled up, the Buckeyes will be on their way to an undefeated regular season. And it may not be close. But if Michigan's defense can keep the game close early, the game may go right down to the wire. And, if Michigan's offensive line comes together, and the Wolverines' defense shuts down the Buckeyes, Michigan could win this game. So, with that in mind ... PREDICTION: Ohio State 35, Michigan 10 PREDICTION: Ohio State 17, Michigan 14 PREDICTION: Michigan 27, Ohio State 17 Could be any of 'em. BUCKEYES Continued from Page 11. "We have not made a final determina- tion as to who will start at quarterback,' Cooper said. "Both will play, but we don't know who will start." That move counters Carr's decision not to announce who will start at tailback for the Wolverines - Chris Howrad or Clarence Williams. Both Ohio State signal-callers will have room to work. Ohio State's best player is 6-foot-6, oward 320-pound offen- sive lineman Orlando Pace, who also plays some defensive end and is being promoted by Ohio State for the Heisman Trophy. He may be one of the greatest offen- sive lineman every to play the game' Carr said. "He is truly a great football player." Ohio State's defense is among the nation's best, too. * Led by defensive tackle Mike Vrabel, the Buckeyes lead the nation in passing cfficiency defense (78.3 percent), are second in scoring defense (10.1 points pergame), and are seventh in both total defense (235.8 yards per game) and rushing defense (92.4). The Wolverines, who struggled to score nine points against Purdue two Read SPORTSMonday for Michigan-Ohio state football ~ coverage from Columbus. weeks ago and could only muster 17 points against Penn State, might be in serious trouble. They have a lot of talent, but they've turned the ball over 10 times in the past two games. Against a defense that scores over 10 points per game, Carr is concerned. "If we cut out the mistakes we've made the last two games, we're going to go down there with the ability to beat this team'" Carr said. Of course, Michigan beats Ohio State more often than not. The Wolverines lead the series 52-34-6 and are 6-1-1 in the past eight games. Amid the fierce rivalry between the two schools, Cooper has felt the pressure. "Believe me, no one respects Michigan football more than John Cooper," said Cooper, who is 2-6-1 life- time against Michigan. The Rivalry No one respects Michigan football more than John cooper." - John Cooper Ohio State football coach The Wolverines are well aware of that, but they have been down lately. "It will be a true test of our attitude." Michigan cornerback Woodrow H ankins said. "This is the biggest game on our schedule. As a group of seniors, we know what we have to do, and we're going to go out and regroup fast." Staff Picks - all picks made against the spread. Game (HOME TEAM IN CAPS) OHIO ST.
