The Michigan Daily - W/4.e, ct.

4B - The Michigan Daily - Wu(e*4d, et. - Best of Ann Arbor - Thursday, April 18, 1996

Best Prof.:
Ralph Williams
Once again, we like you, we really
like you!
Best Course:
Primo Levi
Ralph Williams,again. Nobody does
it better when it comes to the stirring
story of this Holocaust survivor.
Best Residence Hall:
West Quad
Close to campus, mini-mall in the
basement and there's few first-year stu-
dents. Who could want more?
Best Sports Team:
Wolverine Hockey
Alas, a NCAA Championship, and,
not one hockey player broke a window
doing it. Great job, skaters!
Best Michigan Athlete:
Tom Dolan
The best in the world. Enough said.

Best Library:
the Grad
Lots of cool places where nobody
can find you, and lots of cool books to
distract you from studying. Of course,
it'd be nice if one could actually find
the books one needs ...
Best Place to Study:
the Law Library
It's quiet, it's Gothic and, dammit,
you just have to work in this place. If
you don't, the gods of higher learning
will strike you down.
Best Place to Work Out:
the CCRB
The CCRB could also be the win-
ner for "Best Place Not to Pick a
Fight," but that's another story. We
hear the NCRB is really nice, too.
Best Campus Tradition:
the Naked Mile
Naked boys and naked girls, oh
my! We just hope the participants
don't fall.

NOPPORN KICHANANTHA/Daily
The West Quadrangle used to be for men only. Attached to the Union, it is a popular first choice for freshmen.

THE RESULTS!

Best Direction of a Base-
ment Arts production:
Roxy Font, "The Marriage
Dance" (Honorable Men-
tion: Brandon Epland,
"Glengarry Glen Ross" '
Working with original material could
have had many pitfalls, but Font pulled
off "The Marriage Dance" by balanc-
ing a live string quartet and in-the-
roundseating with innovation and style.
The What-Was-She-
Thinking award:
Allison Tkac
For her directorial debut Tkac se-
lected Michael Frayn's problematic'
"Here" for production in the Basement
Arts series. Though she made some
creative attempts, no director could re-
vive such a dead-end script.
The What-Can't-She-Do
award:
Roxy Font
She's a director ("The Marriage
Dance"). She's an actor ("Twelfth
Night"). She's even a dramaturg (also
"The Marriage Dance"). And some-
how this multi-talented woman found
time to serve as editor in chief of the
feminist publication "Third Wave."
Hey, Roxy, what's your GPA?
The Whatever-You-Give-
Me Award:
Matthew Whitten
Moving from the dramatics of
"Twelfth Night"and the Basement Arts
production of "A Walk in the Woods"
to the witty, humorous and touching
Basement Arts production of "The
Good Doctor," Whitten delivered ev-
ery role with power and ease.
The Whatever-You-Give-
Me Award Part Two:
Matt Schicker
He wooed Cinderella in MUSKET's
"Into the Woods"; he talked a great
game in "Glengarry Glen Ross"; he
even managed to shine in the ensemble
cast of"Oh, Coward!" And then there
was that bit he did with Patti LuPone at
Hill Auditorium ... Work it, work it,
Matt. Own it, own it.
The Have-They-Got-It-
Together-Or-What
award:
Musical Theater Class of
1999
Opportunities for first-year perfor-
mance majors are scarce; knowingthis,
these up-and-coming MTs put together
their own show - "Our Time," a col-
lection of Stephen Sondheim songs.
And they directed, choreographed and
staged it themselves. Gangway, world
- get off of their runway!

The It-Defies-Categoriza-
tion award:
"Falsettoland"
Though in the Basement Arts space,
this production transcended the bounds
(and budget) of the average Arena The-
ater show. Lovingly directed by Job
Christensen,,this heartwarming produc-
tion of the William Finn-James Lapine
one-act musical was an achievement
both in concept and in execution. And
they cut a CD!
And we couldn't forget
these performances in the
Basement:
Seth Hitsky and Stephanie
Bernstein, "Love's Labor's
Lost"; Greg Zola,,
"Glengarry Glen Ross";

Ann Arbor' Y C xood.
