12A - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 18, 1996 Michigan men look to Lilk the Kepler Wolverines hope to guild off 5th-place finish at Legends of Indiana tourney By John Friedberg Daily Sports Writer It is a good news, bad news situa- tion for the Michigan men's golfteam. The good news is their performance last weekend. The Wolverines' fifth- place showing at the Legends of Indi- ana tournament was their best of the spring. The bad news for Michigan is the -opposition in this weekend's Kepler ,Invitational in Columbus. "This is the strongest field that we have competed against all season," Michigan coach Jim Carras said. "All 1I of the Big Ten teams will be there, along with other tough teams in the region." In addition to the Big Ten schools, the Wolverines will be shooting against top teams Miami (Ohio), Kent State and Toledo. Miami is a familiar foe for Michi- gan, as the Redskins have finished ahead of the Wolverines in all of the spring tournaments. This weekend is important for Michigan in many ways. The Wolver- ines will get their first chance to com- pete against all of their conference rivals in what should be a preview of the conference tournament. Perhaps more importantly, Michi- gan still has a chance to qualify for districts. "We could take giant steps towards making districts this weekend," Carras said. "Before last weekend, there was almost no possibility, but now there is an outside chance." The Wolverines were ranked 11th in district four before last weekend's high finish. The new rankings are not out yet, but Michigan's strong week- end cannot do anything but help. Only the top six teams make it to districts, so the Wolverines still have a lot of work to do. In the latest rankings released on April 10, Ohio State, Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue were in the top five in Michigan's district. This will be the first time this spring that the Wolverines have seen the Boiler- makers, but the other three teams have consistently finished ahead of the Wolverines. The fifth ranked team in the region is No. 3 Kent State, which is also competing this weekend. The lineup for Michigan will be very similar to last weekend's. Kyle Dobbs regained his No.1 spot with his impressive showing in Indi- ana. Dobbs finished the two-day event in a second-place tie, the best finish of any Wolverine golfer this season. The junior looks to continue improv- ing on his last two efforts, which saw him shoot 228 and last weekend's 224. David Jasper will man the No. 2 position for Michigan. Jasper struggled a bit last weekend in his return from illness. Before missing the Marshall Invitational, he had been the most consistent golferin the spring season. Keith Hinton moves back into the No. 3 slot for the Wolverines. Hinton is looking to rebound from his 235 in the Legends tournament. The sophomore from Port Huron has shown flashes of brilliance this year. His 220 at the Marshall invite placed him seventh and was the best 54-hole score for Michigan this year. Playing at No. 4 this weekend will be freshman Isaac Hinkle. Hinkle had the second-best score for the Wolver- ines last weekend. His 233 placed him behind only Dobbs' 224. Hinkle has also been the top golfer on the team at times this year, as evidenced by his 226 in the ReliaStar Collegiate this fall. The fifth golfer that Michigan takes will be determined in a team-held qualifier that concludes tomorrow. Among the prospects are senior cap- tain Chris Brockway and juniors Jus- tin Hicks, Brent Idalski and Adam Anderson. .3 TONYA BROAD/Daily Scott MacDonald's Wolverines will be split three ways this weekend. The men's team is splitting up, but the men are taking it one step further and splitting three ways this weekend. The Wolverines were originally scheduled to host the Phil Diamond Open meet on Saturday but, due to incomplete renovations at Ferry Field, are on the road again to face competi- tion. The women have the weekend off. Approximately 12 runners are going to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the 71st annual Kansas Relays, and 14 run- ners are headed to East Lansing's Ralph Young Track to compete in the Michi- gan State Spring Sports Festival. The rest of the team, which is mainly composed of distance runners, is taking the weekend off from competition. These Wolverines will bepracticingforthe Penn Relays, which begin next Thursday. "There was a monkey wrench in our plans with the track not being done," Michigan coach Ron Warhurst said. "Be- ing at home would have been good for us, going into the Penn Relays. We wouldn't have had to make all the last-minute travel arrangements, and the guys would have had plenty of time to rest." In Kansas, the Wolverine quartet of Jeff Wood, Brian Renaldi, Todd Burnham and Trinity Townsend is look- ing to post a fast mile-relay time, and Townsend is also looking for a strong mark in the half-mile invitational face. Neil Gardner, who is coming off an NCAA provisional qualifying perfor- mance from last weekend, is just gl ting some extra time outdoors. At East Lansing, the runners are sim- ply looking for their best outdoor sea- son performance without having to don mittens and hats. "The kids are frustrated with the weather conditions we have been run- ning under, with our past three away meets," Warhurst said. "They are frus- trated from a lack of practice outdoor "We are looking for some nb weather and a relaxed competition at MSU." One thing the Wolverines will not see in East Lansing is the Michigan State team. The Spartans have decided to travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for a competition instead of participating in their own home meet. Michigan is scheduled to host the Pad- dock Invitational on May 11, but if the track is not finished by then, the meet vg be held at Eastern Michigan or at another location to be announced later.
