8 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, April 16, 1996 GROOVY Continued from Page 5 and Alice (just kidding ... wanted to see if you were paying attention). "Even then she was a babe," he said of the first time he met McCormick. "I realized I was going to have to be pa- tient if]I wanted a relationship to de- " velop because, after all, she was only 12." Williams continued to talk about a particular series - "The Bradys" - that aired in 1990 and stuck the family with real problems (race-car driver Bobby, alcoholic Marcia and gynecolo- gist Greg?!?). "That was my idea," said the actor. "All of those years ofpractic- ingon Marcia should pay off. We had to 'do something in between commercials." Needless to say, Williams' response was met with groans in the audience. Greg BRADY? Is that you talking? You're grounded. The evening ended with a question- and-answer period, in which Williams fielded such questions as "What hap- pened to Tiger?" "Why wasn't cousin Oliver ever asked back for the re- unions?" and "Do you think you lead a bizarre life?" Uh ... that's an easy one .. yeah. Afterward, audience members lined up in the lobby and had the chance to talk with Williams, get his autograph and buy various pieces of "Brady Bunch" memorabilia--CDs and shirts. Beforehand, Williams, our very own Greg Brady, had some advice forgradu- ating seniors. What was it? What else, but to"Keep on groovin'." Marky's sFear. So most i d es fi m ev r a. 1 he bad ... it's too good By Bryan Lark Taily Arts Writer Don't let those seemingly excessive stars mislead you. Even though "Fear" is really entertaining, it isstill oneofthe most mindless films evermade. In other words, it's so bad ... it's good. iThe filn is sure to become a campy classic along the lines of "Showgirls," and sadly enough, seeing "Fear" will likely become one of the top guilty pleasures for many. Although it's not relentlessly boring like some recent movie fare, "Fear" is shockingly, but not innovatively, sus- penseful. The notorious overacting and predictable story line give this film an overall feeling of deja vu. Lack of originality is what will un- doubtedly compel future viewers to hurl Do you want to write for the Summer Daily? This latest insipid installment of the unofficial "... "Good Vibrations," indeed. "Fear" marks the debut of the artist formerly known as Marky Mark, as a leading man. Now preferring to be cal led Mark Wahlberg, he proves here that he is presumably only capable of leading the blind. That is not to say that Wahlberg is a bad actor; he does have a few scenes of psychotic brilliance. Still, no one could make thiscinematically challenged film an overall artistic success. Telling thetale of]I6-year-old Nicole Walker (Reese Witherspoon). the film focuses on her meeting and ensuing relationship with charming. older hood- lum David McCall (Wahlberg). Nicole and David first catch each other's eve at a flannel-coffeehouse in downtown Seattle. Their second en- counter, at a rave, is full of smiles and petty flirting. Then, like an episode of"The Grind" gone horribly wrong, everyone at the rave is inexplicably running for their lives, and David and Nicole only have each other to trust. Before you can say "Fatal Attrac- tion," David strips Nicole of her virgin- ity, then becomes overly protective and violent, causing Nicole to break up with him. Nicole finds out for herself that David is not Mr. Right but Mr. Downright Insane. Through a window. Nicole witnesses David sexually assaulting her wild, drug-addled best friend Margo, played with unexpected sensual flair by Alyssa Milano of "Who's The Boss?" Samantha! By the time the climax occurs, it is not a question of whether David will die, but of when and how will David die. Impalement? [lectrocution? Re- peated blows to the head? See the film if you w ish to know the real cause of imminent death. Written by Christopher Crowe, best known for Michael Mann's adaptation of"The Last OfThe Mohicans.""Fear" relies heavily on the fact that the at ence will be appalled by David's havior and come to fear for the well- being of Nicole and the other Walkers. Instead, viewers will relish David's antics, the most gratifying of which is hisself-tattooing of"Nicole4 Eva" into his torso, and come to see the Walkers as a hindrance to his obsessional delusions.
