University geochemists have found the first direct evidence indicating that the Earth's metallic core and the moon must have formed at least 50 million years after the origin of the solar system - much later in the planet's development than many sci- entists believe. In a study published in the Dec. 21 issue of the journal Nature, Der-Chuen Lee, a University postdoctoral re- search fellow and Alexander Halliday, a professor of geological sciences, analyzed and compared tungsten iso- topes in meteorites, earth rocks and lunar basalt. . "We were trying to give a time con- straint as to when the (Earth's) core was actually formed," Lee said. Most scientists believe that the plan- ets in the solar system formed about 4.57 billion years ago from a huge cloud of interstellar gas, dust and debris left over from the birth of the sun. Accord- ing to a statement from the University, the Earth and other rocky planets built up gradually over a 50- to 100-million- year period. However, geologists disagree about when and how the Earth changed from a disorganized ball of rock to the planet it is today. To resolve the timing questions, Lee and Halliday used a new, ex- tremely precise technique to measure relative amounts of primitive meteor- ites made of the same material present when the solar system developed. They also analyzed several samples of lunar basalt collected by Apollo 14 astronauts. Based on their data and a series of mathematical equations, Lee and Halliday established a time frame for the formation of the core. "The data also places important con- straints on the age of the moon," Halliday said. "The moon probably formed after the Earth developed its core, but more research will be necessary before we can say exactly when and how it hap- pened." Although the timing of the event is now much more certain, the mecha- nism for formation of the Earth's core remains a mystery, Halliday said. Regents hold search forum in Dearborn By Jeff Eldridge Daily Staff Reporter DEARBORN - The themes ofprac- tical education and continued academic success were emphasized in the eighth of nine University presidential search forums, and the day's second for the regents, yesterday. Many speakers at the meeting de- scribed the University's youngest cam- pus as an important part of Detroit and industry in southeast Michigan. They expressed hope that the new president would appreciate this role of the campus, founded in 1959. The Dearborn campus is comprised of commuter students and has no resi- dence halls. Many of the students are older, nontraditional students. "Our graduates remain in southeast- ern Michigan serving the community and the international manufacturing powerhouse centered here," said Timo- thy T. Morback, a Dearborn alumnus. Morback also lamented the lack of private contributions made to the Dearborn campus, saying that many gifts go to Ann Arbor instead. Lawrence Berkove, a professor of English language and literature, said the business aspects of University man- agement are overrated. "The University is not a business," he said. "The president is not a CEO. Students are not customers and educa.- tion is not a product to be packaged." Morback said he is worried that the value of a Dearborn degree could de- cline over time, just as it has at other universities. "Through administrative neglect the value of a degree from some colleges has declined over the years," Morback said. "That must not occur at the Univer- sity of Michigan at Dearborn." ** SPRING BREAK % Jamaica,t Bahamas, Florida. Lowest prices; Call now to reserve your spot. Joshi 2256 or Kim @332-7863!
