A 8A - The Michigan Daily - Monday, April 8, 1996 RECORDS Continued from Page 5A quote the lyric sheet, Cirafelli sings: "(scream) / I like you / Oooh yeahh / (scream) / I like you / Take me away." Needless to say, you don't want to hear Lucia scream, or later sing, "I just want to be your teddy bear." If Drill weren't being so serious, they might be able to achieve the tacky great- ness of, say, The Cycle Sluts From Hell. But, as it is, all they achieve is the lofty position as my beverage coaster. - Dave Snyder Hamell On Trial Big As Life Polygram Records Ed Hamell could care less if you like him. Most of the blisteringly per- sonal punk-folk songs on this CD smack you in the face like a hot wok before pulling your gym shorts down around your knees and shoving your head in the toilet. Not that Hamell comes off like some bullying Hootie and the Fratfish fan; on the contrary, Ed Hamell is the 98-pound weakling VISIONS OF WOMEN'S HEALTH.. . He's a P.C. crusader with a razor- sharp wit and a score to settle. I say, more power to him. "Big As Life" starts out rather unassumingly with the almost peppy love song, "Sugarfree," then leaps into the hard-rocking, "End of The World As We Know It" influenced"Harmony." These tunes announce Hamell's inten- tions right off the bat: You might have some fun, but you're going to learn something too. The next song, "Blood Of The Wolf," is a five-minute spoken word routine about Ed's friend who robbed a Ken- tucky Fried Chicken with a fork; ironi- cally, it is one of the most beautifully written songs on the disc. Whatever Ed Hamell lacks in guitar skills he more than makes up for with his mastery of the English language. Unfortunately, Hamell sometimes becomes so convinced of his own bril- liance that he ends up tossing out a couple of lame songs that would be far more impressive if they weren't written by a grown man. The worst of these is "Piccolo Joe," a weak attempt to sound "beat" that's based around a stupid Dr. Seuss rhyme scheme, with lines like "What do you know / It's Piccolo Joe /They call him that'cause he's high / No time for fun / there's work to be done / Doing the deals on the sly." Hamell's at his best when he mixes equal parts comedy and political com- mentary, then throws in three or four guitar chords to back thetwholerthing up. The two best songs are "Big As Life," a poppy three-chord ditty about meeting Count Basic, and "Z-Roxx," which contains the immortal line, "Man, man, man, man, I don't give a fuck about your band, band, band, band." Like Ed Hamell or not, he somehow managed to get Polygram Records to release "Big As Life," an overwhelm- ingly-impressive and passionate debut.
