Local ATM users will avoid fee increases DETROIT (AP) - While some con- sumers across the nation could be charged an extra fee to use automated teller ma- chines outside of their bank's own sys- tem, consumers in Michigan have little to worry about inside the state. Magic Line, the network that includes 99 percent of Michigan banks, does not allow the surcharges, said Darlene Crumbaugh, marketing director. Three major Michigan banks - NBD, Comericaand MichiganNational Bank - say they don't plan to levy the fees even if they could. "We're not in favorofit," NBD Presi- dent Tom Jeffs said. "We think it's an excessive price burden forcustomersto bear." Jeffs, also vice chairman of there- cently merged First Chicago NBD, said the bank has urged customers to conduct more transactions electronically. The surcharge would only discourage them. Crumbaugh said Magic Line might allow the surcharge if its 670 member banks, credit unions and savings and loan institutions favor it. A recent mem- ber survey shows "mixed opinions," she said. ENTITY Continued from Page 1. Pijanowski said he supported the development of a multimedia pro- gram. "I think we should do it as soon as possible. We recognize the need at the School of Art and Design," he said. Jamy Sheridan, adjunct assistant professor in the School of Art and Design, said he supports entity but doesn't see obvious benefits to hav- ing a multimedia major. "From my experience, employers are more in- terested in your portfolio. They are interested in what you've done," Sheridan said. Allen Samuels, dean of the School of Art and Design, said education at the University is not about getting a job. "It is about intellectual inquiry and educating people so they can be useful and creative, which may help people get a job," Samuels said. "We want to provide a broad and deer education, which is different thar training for a job." Bradley said that in addition to help- ing students compete in the work- place, the concentration would link schools across the University if the free-floating option were adopted. "There are so many aspects to (the program), maybe it shouldn't just b based in the Art School," Bradley said. Samuels agreed that "academically it would be a good idea for the pro- gram to be campuswide, but said he "would caution that the free-floatin idea might be difficult. (The program should be housed somewhere so some- one can nurture it." Bradley said the group is looking a the Media Union on North Campus a a possible home for the new program According to entity, with the open- ing of the Media Union as well as the pre-existing New Media Center, th University will possess facilities an equipment superior to the University of Washington, which is currently de- veloping a multimedia major. Bradley said entity is tentatively looking at raising student interest b, distributing pamphlets at summer on entation and by sponsoring petitior drives.
