The Michigan Daily - SPORTSTuesday - Tuesday, January 16, 1996 - 7B PITTS Continued from Page 2B University added sports, cut others but basically, although difficult, found a way to do it. Will it take a similar act for the Ath- letic Department to make the same ad- justments towardtincluding more people of color in its front office? It's all right for the Wheatleys, Webbers and Howards to help rake in huge amounts of revenue for the Uni- versity, but when will minorities be able to claim some of the top spots down at Weidenbach Hall? I don't think until the Athletic Depart- ment sees its finances cut into will it firmly address this issue. In May, mem- bers of the Rainbow Coalition vowed to shoo minority recruits away from Michi- gan if Athletic Director Joe Roberson didn't consider a minority candidate for the then-vacant football coaching job. That never went through because Roberson never had any candidates but Lloyd Carr for the job. I hope the University keeps in mind that in the future this could creep up again. Imagine what it would do to Michigan's basketball and football teams if groups persuaded the best mi- nority recruits to not come to Ann Ar- bor because of the racial makeup of the Athletic Department. That would have a dramatic effect on the Athletic Department. A lot of money would surely be lost and maybe some- one might start listening. It took lost revenue for the people of Arizona to start listening. In less than two weeks from now, the Phoenix area will get its second chance at trying to host a Super Bowl. It was five years ago that the NFL told voters in the state of Arizona to accept the King holiday or don't plan on hosting the Super Bowl. The ballot measure did not pass and the 1993 Super Bowl was moved to Pasadena. Arizona now has the King holiday and, conveniently enough will host the NFL's championship game 12 days from now. It's another example of how when moneytalks, people always listen. When that alumni and Nike money starts talk- ing, I'm sure someone down at 1000 S. State Street will take notice. I issue a challenge to the Michigan Athletic Department to make the same strides that the rest of the University is making in minority hiring. It can only make for a more diverse, even better department. To have such a few amount of mi- norities in the office while large amounts of students of color participate on th6 courts and fields around campus is pre" posterous. I hope none of these athletes take anything for granted, though. I am reminded of one of the closing remarks of Dr. Jocelyn Elders, the symposium's keynote speaker. Elders reminded members of the crowd to not forget where you come from. How true that is. No matter how successful you are in business, athletics, education and other aspects of life you just have to remem- ber where your roots are. Remember that there are many of your brothers and sisters who may never get the chance that you have. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 1996 has come to a close. The ideas brought forth during the day should be recalled throughout the next 364 days. Let it be a reminder of the progress that has been made but also of how much more progress must still be made. And if people are going to be chang- ing names of buildings around campus, I've got one: How about Russell Arena? Afterall, it is "The House That Cazzie Built." - Antoine Pitts can be reached over e-mail at apitts@umich.edu AP Top 25 He is the new Associated Press men's college basketball poll for games through Jan. 14.
