Malchow Wolverine pitcher Gif In hurls fect game over bre By Mark Snyder Daily Sports Writer Perfect. How else can a game without hits or walks be described? The Wolverine softball team wit- nessed the nearly impossible feat Fri- day as Michigan All-American pitcher Sara Griffin threw a perfect game. The 6-0 shocker of No. 10 Okla- homa was cause for celebration. Griffin's perfect game'was just the second in school history. At the Hillenbrand Invitational over the weekend of March 8-10, the No. 14 Wolverines crushed the Sooners with their flawless fielding behind Griffin. Oklahoma, by contrast, committed seven errors as it stumbled its way into history - on the wrong side. Griffin helped her own cause with her bat. She slugged her way to two doubles and scored the first and only run nec- essary to gain victory. Her gem was backed up by nine Michigan hits, including "a triple by senior Tracy Carr. The Wolverines continued their winning ways by following the game up with its third victory in two days of competition over North Carolina. The Tar Heels were no match for the Wol- verines as Michigan rolled to the 10- 2 rout. The dominance of Michigan Friday was evident in the second game of the day as Michigan, sparked by 13 hits, forced the mercy rule on the Tar Heels. North Carolina was forced to sur- render after three Wolverine sluggers led the way with two-hits each. The Tar Heels were on their heels the entire game as Michiganjunior Kelly Holmes attempted to match Griffin's perfect feat. Although she fell short, the combined four hits al- lowed by the Wolverine pitchers raised Holmes' record to 5-2, in this season. Michigan's team record improved to 8-5 with the victories at the end of the seven-day stretch in which the Wolverines played in two tournaments as well as non-tournament contests in the middle of the week. Over the weekend of March 13, the Wolverines made a strong show- ing at the San Diego State/Cartier Spring Classic. The team came in third place, defeating two ranked team in the process. Most impressive about the tournament play was the Wolver- ines' upset victory over No. 5 Cal. State-Fullerton. Holmes got the'W' in theupset4 showed why she and Griffin areso important to the Wolverines' fortunes. Combined with Griffin's 3-3 record, the two pitchers have received a deci- sion in every game thus far. Presently, Michigan is the top- ranked Big Ten team in the USA To- day/NCSA national poll. But Minrie- sota and Indiana are close on the Wolverines' trail at No. 15 and N. 17, respectively.. After opening the season at No.2, the Wolverines are looking fop. a springboard to reclaim their spot.in the rankings. Griffin's outing is-thie perfect place to start. (Except possibly the NCAA Tournament - but you can read about It all week right here.) By Sharat Raju For the Daily Don't you hate it when you've been preparing for spring break, set to have a good time, only to have it rain and ruin your plans? That is probably how the Michigan men's gymnastics team felt after their quad meet during the school's spring break. Brigham Young, Penn State and Michigan State reigned supreme over j,1 the struggling Wolverine tumblers. The first of two competitions was held at Provo, Utah March 7. The 10th-ranked Cougars didn't disap- point their home crowd by finishing first in the quad meet with 224.25 points. They were followed by Penn State with 222.5, the Spartans with 221.5 and, in last place Michigan with 207.5. "We are putting in the effort in training and competition, but we are just not in their league," Wolverine coach Bob Darden said. Michigan should not be too disap- pointed since the meet was a tough one. Penn State was No. 4, Brigham Young No. 10 and Michigan State No. 14. Certain individuals on the Wolver- ine squad performed as well as they have all season. Senior Chris Onuska scored a 9.2 on the pommel horse and senior Kris Klinger placed fourth in the high bar with a 9.6. Senior Jason MacDonald contrib- uted with a 9.15 in the floor exercise and 9.35 in the high bar. Freshman Randy D'Amura received a 9.2 on the floor exercise. However, those efforts were not enough. Michigan fell in last pla e, 14 points behind the next closest teen, Michigan State. The Michigan tumblers were to witness some amazing performan by top-ranked gymnasts. Michigan State's strongest show- ing came from Joe Duda, who took third in the all-around, including a 9.75 in the rings. Ethan Sterk also contributed with 9.6 in the pommnel horse and a fifth place finish in the all-around. The Nittany Lions' Roy Malka cap- tured second in the all-around. Malka contributed a 9.75 performance in high bar and a 9.7 in the pomrmel horse. Steve McSparren and Joe Roemer also came through with scores of4.7 in floor exercise and rings, respec- tively. However, Brigham Young's Darren Elg topped them all by scoring a 57.95 in the all-around, which was high- lighted by a perfect10 in the highb'ar. He followed with a 9.9, giving rn a 9.95 in the event. He also won-the floor exercise with a 9.85.
