College Dems. refturn from N.H.l By Stephanie Jo Klein Daily Staff Reporter Seven University students braved the roads for 16 hours this weekend, driving to New Hampshire tocampaign forPresi- dent Clinton. They joined students from Michigan State University, Colby Col- lege and American University, and other members of College Democrats of America, rallying across the state prior to yesterday's presidential primary. LSAjunior Jae-Jae Spoon, presidentof the University chapter, said the group actively promoted the Clinton/Gore ticket by passing out campaign literature and participating in highly visible marches. "It got us excited to do stuff here (in Michigan) for the primary in two and a half weeks," Spoon said. The group spent most ofthe weekend in Portsmouth, which one member called "the Democratic jewel of the state." The students blanketed the town with political pamphlets. Although Clinton campaign advisers specifically warnedstudentsnot to nega- tively campaign against Republicans, there was almost a breach of this agree- ment, Spoon said. Students from the University protested during a rally for Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander, a Republican presidential candidate. "We diverted the route (of Alexander's walk through the state) away from Market Square," Spoon said. "Students were screaming in favor of Clinton. It was very positive." John Bauer, an LSA first-year stu- dent who went on the trip, said the students' proximity to the actual politi- cal scene was exciting. "When we went to other candidates' events, we took the spotlight offofthem," Bauer said. "The national press started to pay attention to all the young people." David Wade, national membership director for CDA and ajunior at Brown University, said the message from the students' activism was well receivedby the public. "When it's 10 degrees out and people are driving by on those backroads on Main Street in Manchester and they see a Clinton/Gore sign, they recognize how strong the president's support is with students," he said. PRIMARY Continued from Page 1 tance as predictors of national voting patterns. "This is a goofy way to nominate a president," he said. "The number of people voting in the Republican caucus in Iowa was 100,000- the same as the number going to Michigan Stadium every Saturday afternoon." Kingdon also took issue with the choices of states for the early party votes. "Louisiana? Iowa? New Hamp- shire? Why should they have this wildly disproportionate influence on choosing the next president?" Chuck Yob, former Michigan cam- paign manager for Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, said he thought the news me- dia tried too hard to make New Hamp- shire a major force in the election. Yob said the Republican National Committee may suggest changing the process to include regional instead of state prinaries and caucuses. Kingdon said he also thought change was needed to keep the primary system realistic. "The federal government should declare that no state shall hold primaries or caucuses before such-and-such a date ... they'd all line up for the earliest date possible and would dilute the impact of states like Iowa and New Hampshire," Kingdon said. Engineering first-year student Jim Riske said yesterday's events could influ- ence voting patterns. Riske said Buchanan's popularity is not unexpected, as he did well in Iowa and New Hamp- shire in 1988 and 1992. "Primarily, this damages Dole more than anyone else," said Riske, state cam- paign manager for former U.S. ambassa- dor Alan Keyes's GOP presidential bid. "When people stop viewing (Dole) as the front-runner it will cut down his support, because there are alot ofpeople who support (Dole) just because he's the front-runner," Riske said. Angela Jerkatis, president of the University's chapter of College Repub- licans, said the close race would force GOP supporters to pay attention. 1 "It's definitely going to make the primary season more interesting for Republicans and they will stay in tune, because at this point we're not sure what's going to happen," she said. Other party members, like state Rep. Clyde LeTarte(R-Horton),saidthey were 7 BEDROOM house. May-Aug. Mary St. Group or indiv. $300/mo. neg. 332-1979.
