Ell 4wCt-) * d* O~ £ I ~In nI M IW Paul Antony, a first-year. Medical student, won't compromise when it comes to preserving the beauty of the Michigan Union-especially the fourth floor stairwell. Because of fire codes and an effortfto make the student offices more inviting for use, a historical stairwell from the third floor to the fourth floor is sched- uled to soon be destroyed. Last December, Antony, who often used the stairwell as a study spot, no- ticed the architectural plans for the stair- well and the area around the third and fourth floor landings. "I got a sick feeling in my stoinachlto think that such a beautiful and historic place that has been here for 90 years is going to be gone," Antony said. The plans for the fourth floor, be- cause of the fire code, include enclos- ing the stairwell and installing large fire doors. Three stairwells in the Union have already undergone the same con- struction as a result of the fire code, Audrey Schwimmer, a member of the Michigan Union Board of Repre- sentatives, saidthat she has spoken with Antony to see ifanything can be done to alter the construction plans. "I am 100 percent for preserving the beauty of the Union, and Paul and I agree on that," Schwimmer said. "However, I am also concerned with making the building safe for students, and in instances such as keeping with the fire code - we need to give a little." Schwimmer said she is in the process of meeting with the architects to see if there are any alternatives to,the present construction plan. However, she said construction wll begin this week. Antony said enclosing the stairwell will greatly change the atmosphere of the fourth floor. "Enclosing the stairwell will reduce the amount of light that hits the area and will take away a lot of its beauty and character. They will be ruining the ef- fect that was wanted when it was built back in 1906," Antony said. Student groups housed on the fourth floor voted in favor of the renovations last year to make the fourth floor more inviting and to attract more stu- dents. The student offices have been tem- porarily moved to the Perry Building for the duration of the remodeling: LSA senior Louis Stefanic, MSA administrative coordinator, said that although he feels the fourth floor rerfo- vations are needed, the stairwell should be preserved. GRAMLICH Continued from Page 1 The third proposal, which Gramlich supports, is a combination of the two plans. Some benefits would be scaled back to make up for loss of funds, but there would not be an across-the-board tax to ease the transition. Individual Retirement Accounts wouldbemanda- tory for all participants. Gramlich said the accumulated funds in IRAs would be available for invest- ment in eitherstocks orbondsand would lead to greater profits for system par- ticipants. "It matters more the younger you are," Gramlich said. "If you're 50, you don't accumulate a lot. If you're 20, you do." Marty Eichstadt, the University's di- rector of benefits, said the proposals to increase investment choices would make for sound national policy. "The key for adequate financial plan- ning is diversity," she said. University employees are offered the chance to participate in an established retirement plan. "It's a very rich plan," Eichstadt said. "The University putsin 10 percent of the salary if the employee puts in 5 percent." Gramlich said the possibility of us- ing IRAs and PSAs could increase par- ticipation and faith from younger pro- fessionals, like fourth-year Inteflex su- dent John Mitchell. Mitchell said hehas little confidence that the system will be in place to sup- port him when he retires. "I'd like to see (Social Security) be there for my parents. If we don't make some kind of changes, (the system) will collapse," he said. Mitchell said putting Social Secu- rity funds into the stockmarket sounded 1 FEM.
