1,200-count
idictment
CHICAGO (AP) - Four children,
the youngest now 5 years old, were
allegedly raped, drugged and fed fried
rats and boiled cockroaches at the hands
of their own parents - not once, but
again and again over at least four years.
"It's a serious case, it's a terrible
case," Mark Cavins, who heads the
county prosecutor's sexual crimes di-
vision, said yesterday. "It involves
two parents who systematically and
repeatedly abused the children." The
1,200-count indictment against Gerald
Hill, 52, gives a hellish description of
the lives of the youngsters, now 5, 10,
11 and 12. Hill, father of two of the
children, was charged with criminal
sexual assault, criminal sexual abuse,
aggravated battery to a child and ag-
gravated battery.
The 6-inch-indictment, from Janu-
ary and made public Monday, claims
dozens of incidental sexual penetra-
tion and aggravated battery charges,
says Hill "stuck a hypodermic needle"
in his children to inject narcotics.
Cavins said these incidents occurred
over five years.
The stocky, muscular man, stood si-
lently during a two-minute status hear-
ing yesterday.
His attorney Elliott Price said his
client has a criminal history and though
he turned himself in to face the charges
remains innocent.
"The fact the indictment (weighs)
pounds doesn't make the case any more
severe," Price said. "Itis my position he
is in fact innocent."
Barbara Hill,'41, the mother of all
four children, was charged with crimi-
nal sexual assault. The prosecutor said
he expects further charges against her.
Both were held on $100,000 bond.
Family members told WLS-TV that
the charges are untrue. Henry Lawrence,
Mrs. Hill's brother, said the children
were well-cared for and had not been
sexually or physically abused.
Fourtimes since May 1993, the state's
Department of Children and Family
Services received calls alleging child
neglect at the home.
But it was only last spring that allega-
tions of abuse arose, when the children
began acting strangely after they were
placed in the care of a relative because
they had been left home alone, DCFS
spokesperson Martha Allen said.

junk mail
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Ram
Avrahami believes his name is worth
something, and if magazines, record
clubs and credit card companies can
buy and sell it, he ought to get a share of
the profits.
Avrahami, a 33-year-old former
marketing manager for a phone com-
pany is suing U.S. News & World
Report, arguing that the magazine had
no right to sell his name and address

to another company without his per-
mission.
"It is unfair to me. Actually it is
unfair to me twice," he said yesterday.
"The magazine sells my name without
asking me, and then I receive the junk
mail for which I really have no use."
Representatives of the direct-mar-
keting industry say the lawsuit is un-
founded, and they fear devastating con-
sequences if Avrahami prevails.
"Look at it this way: If I want to
send you something and have to call
you or write you to make sure it's OK
to send you this material, do you know
what it's going to do to the direct-
marketing industry?" said Ed Burnett,
a direct-mail consultant in New Jer-
sey. "It's going to kill it, that's what
it's going to do."
The lawsuit is not the first to chal-
lenge direct-mail marketing, but it ap-
parently is the first to target the seller of
a mailing list rather than the buyer.
Challenges to the direct-mail indus-
try on the grounds that receiving unin-
vited mail violates a person's privacy
rights have failed.
Since filing the lawsuit last summer,
Avrahami has emerged as something of
achampion ofthe American Everyman.
His electronic mailbox overflows with
the complaints of fellow sufferers, and
his lawyer has gotten so many calls he
is considering aclass-action case against
