Workshops
call for
communit
strength
' professors join
local school officials in
collaboration seminars
By Soumya Mohan
Daily Staff Reporter
DETROIT- Principal Roy Johnson
of the Paul Robeson Academy told
workshop participants of the merits ofa
seven-day school week, adding that he
plans to implement such a schedule at
his school.
Johnson spoke to a crowd of more
than 200 in a working session at the
"Commitment to Collaboration: New
Strategies for Community-Based De-
velopment" symposium.
In Friday's workshop titled "School-
Family-Community Collaboration,
Johnson showed a video of some of the
inner workings of his school, empha-
sizing the advantages of weeklong con-
tinuous learning, which has not actu-
ally been instated yet at the academy.
Johnson said, "The academy is a
village providing students all facilities
to survive.
Johnson said the academy has high
expectations of students' parents. "If
the expectations are low, then the par-
ents participate less," he said. "If we
expect more, then we get more. If we
expect less, then we get less."
Education Prof. Arnetha Ball, who
sat on the panel with Johnson, said she
sees herself as not only a University
professor, but also as an educator, a
researcher, a mother and an African
American woman. Ball said her mem-
bership in several diverse communities
adds to her teaching and research.
Speaking about her wide range of
research experience, Ball said her chal-
lenge is to investigate ways to recog-
nize and utilize the resources used-by
students outside traditional classrooms.
Ball said she enters all community-
based organizations as a learner.
"It's important for university per-
sonnel, researchers who participate in
this collaboration, that they come in not
as experts but as learners," she stressed.
Education Prof. Brian Rowan and
psychology assistant Prof. Rosario
Ceballo were the other two panelists at
the session.
In another workshop called, "Uni-
versity Students as Technical Assis-
tance Providers," Matt Rosen, a recent
University School of Social Work alum,
spoke about his experiences as a stu-
dent technical assistance provider.
"The semester system does not work
well for community-based systems,
Rosen said. He explained that pace is
not uniform in students' lives due to
varying study loads, long vacations fol-
lowed by periods of intense activity,
and unexpected changes that often oc-
cur.
However, Patricia Alexander, amem-
ber of Core City Neighborhoods, said
she did not see hectic scheduling as a
problem. Alexander said Core City
Neighborhoods has received free tech-
nical assistance from University stu-
dents.
"The city staff had nothing but praise
for the students' professionalism and

technical skills," she said.
University alum Todd Richardson,
who now works for the U.S. Depart-
ment of Housing and Urban Develop-
ment, said the symposium was infor-
mative.
"Since they have lots of people from
different organizations here, I think it's
been very useful and there's been a
constructive exchange of ideas."

far apart, but sometimes that distance
seems greater," said Rackham student
Josh Sirefeman.
Seeing a child or senior citizen is a
rare occurrence for some students, Hart-
